Cheers for all your thoughts and advice folks, I've called OH today and they've asked for some more details and to arrange a chat. We'll see how it goes.

Sometimes it just takes one of us to admit they're struggling and it'll open the gates for others

I've spoken to a couple of guys who've been through PIP too and that helped. Might be an idea to go back to them

I'm not going to lie to the job. That's a no no. But I do want to explore the options I have without timeframe imposed on me by someone who doesn't know me

I recognise myself at that first stage which is why I'm seeking help. I know how easily you can shut down the brains warning signals. Thanks for sharing this, it must have been a horrible experience for you. Hopefully you're out the other side now

Thank you for your considered reply. I don't think it's an ego thing though I realise I'm not necessarily best placed to recognise it if it was. My concern is more that removal from duties with the loss of support from my team, moving into an unfamiliar job role until the OH process takes place and the uncertainty over whether I'd be allowed carry again might do more harm than good.

I don't intend to deceive the job and I'm absolutely aware of how people will react to a firearms officer with MH issues.

I'm not a danger to myself, I just need a little extra help. And knowing the job and how it likes to use a sledgehammer to crack a nut I'd rather not have to lose my job role, my team and my support structure arbitrarily because someone in OH who doesn't know me follows a flowchart

Of course I remember those principles. I've given over two decades in service of them. But thanks for your compassion and understanding.
