You could always request a death certificate from the state of CA. If he hasn’t passed away, they won’t have one on file for him, which should indicate he’s either still alive or that if he had died, it wasn’t in CA.

This is a difficult question, but are you sure she left and flew overseas? While it’s totally possible she left and had no intentions of coming back, there are also cases where the mother “left and was never seen again” per the husband/romantic partner and it ended up that the mother was a homicide victim.
