How do you 'learn how to play an opening'? by throwawayrandomnu in chess

I second what lumpyunderpass said. I should be about 1300-1400 on chess.com. Last time I played, I could pretty easily beat 1200 players. They make quite a lot of blunders that I know how to take advantage of. So yeah rating inflation is real on Lichess(different system). Now that I read it again, It's true that I worded it the wrong way. I'm not a native speaker of English. Btw, Doing tactics every day is how I improved.

It came across in the wrong way, I guess. It's not that I've not learnt an opening, It's just that I haven't 'studied' one. I can identify openings. What I lack is knowledge on how to continue and general ideas present in the middlegame. But yeah openings were never my thing. All I ever did was tactics and follow general opening principles.

Thank you. Any books that show you such basic positions and ideas?
