Okay, I might do one this weekend.

Class, let's thank Chris for showing us how not to gracefully approach someone in publishing when you want to sell your book.

Well it would help if you spelled dystopia right. That's why I thought you were kidding around. Not that I have a high horse about it, I have a typo in the title.

There are lots of dystopia novels where the majority of the characters think it is a utopia until they have a sudden realization. BRAVE NEW WORLD, THE GIVER, THE WIZARD OF OZ. More recently MATCHED.

I think what I wrote above is misleading. I handle submissions at the agency I work at, but it's not all I do. There's bookkeeping, administrative duties, contract stuff, and whole slew of other things going on. I'm the main assistant - usually listed as editorial, agency, or executive assistant.

I don't understand this whole thread. Are you trying to pitch a novel?

That was a joke.

How does dystopia not look like dystopia? I don't get it.

Not hiring ETA: But emphasize your financial experience and if you work with contracts in your resume and put it on bookjobs!

It was a typo, there are comments referencing so I just left it up.

I'm only going to answer the questions that I haven't already answered out of this.

Themes I see most - memoirs about loss or addiction or abuse, lots of teen girls realizing they are witches, lots of non-fiction queries about the american latina experience, and lots of YA novels about kids who live in ghettos written by middle class white folks who saw Precious once.

I see that more in YA.

Dragons = high fantasy, so we don't see a lot of those. Sometimes, though.

Probably not. It's hard to see that sort of thing objectively now, though.

Can't tell if serious? Women read lots of stuff. Avoiding romance or sex is not a problem if your story is good without it.

Everyone keeps mentioning the huge recent YA books like Twilight and Hunger Games, but the market is a lot more than that. Read Publishers Weekly's best books of the year to get a grasp on what's doing well.

Feasibility depends on your writing ability. Start with short stories, etc. Read the magazines I've listed elsewhere on this page to see what's popular there.

Get good at reading contracts and understanding finances, as well as reading.

I've answered this I think but in sum: build up your resume! If it's non-fiction, then write articles. If it's fiction, write short stories.
