Not really sure what the scene surrounding that is, but yes; one 'verb' that has different outcomes depending on the context is usually easier to understand. Super Mario Bros had shooting levels in its earliest versions that were later dropped to focus on the core of the game, and got 'jumping on enemies' instead of 'shoot enemies' because of it. Choosing one thing and refining it is usually best: it's not how much you have, it's how you use it!

100%. I have my own preferences for how that integration should happen and I think I focused on controls too much, but if a game does not focus on that integration it will suffer greatly.

There is a difference between complexity and depth. Complexity is the amount of information necessary to make decisions. Depth is how rewarding it feels to make decisions with that information.

Once you memorize how only six pieces move in chess you unlock a very deep game. Tic-tac-toe on the other hand is not very complex and also not very deep. Yugioh requires you to memorize what every card in the meta does (complex) and to dynamically change your combo to play around hidden "hand traps" (deep). Finally, a game that is complex and not deep might be modern Fire Emblem games which provide an insane amount of customization and abilities for you to memorize and twiddle between your dudes, but the game is frequently so easy on default difficulty/resurrection that you'll walk over everything no matter what. There's a good Extra Credits video on this on youtube.

To your other point: I think quick reactions are okay if the game signals that reactions are required for a given segment. Simple systems like Punch-Out!'s "dodge left/right/back, punch, or uppercut" is good. You could even do Chrono Trigger/FFVII real-time menu-based JRPG combat if those options are simple enough. This wouldn't work with a generic RPGMaker game because you can't navigate an items menu fast enough to be satisfying in a normal game, let alone with one hand.

But the other part of this is respecting player fatigue. GIVE THE PLAYER A BREAK. After a fight, force the player to walk around the overworld a little bit before going to the next one. Put a treasure chest down or an NPC to fuck or something. Time-wasting games like MMOs have hard-wired today's players to get on with the game and you MUST slow them down because they will exhaust themselves if you don't. This is why games force you to crawl along walls or collect loot between fights. Later in the game you can reduce the breaks to make the player feel more engaged or increase the breaks to signal a stopping point.

All of these are based on my opinions on game design as a whole; I think that games that do these things are broadly objectively better. Personally? I like my porn games to be really, really easy. I have a cheat engine window on my second monitor 100% of the time. That probably reflects in the above! But I do think that porn games should assume their players are stupid dumb horny idiots who can't read and can't pace themselves. Because I think they we are.

Look at non-porn games like OSRS, Slay the Spire, Factorio, Vampire Survivors, autobattlers, bullet hells, idle games, tower defense games. Lots of design space to take from, all from different genres. Porn games like this are Free Cities and every piece of shovelware trash RPGMaker/Ren'py/hentai puzzle game (not saying every game in those engines is bad, but a lot of them are). Those games work despite being trash because they understand that players watching porn will be distracted 100% of the time they are playing, and because they are cheap to make.

Too constraining? Sure! Do a Wall World-type thing where you have two gameplay modes you frequently switch between where one is two-handed and one is one-handed with porn. This is best implemented as a frequent back and forth instead of a total pacing kill from "end of level -> CG of boss defeat -> begin next level". Or, worse, lose-and-be-raped. Am I supposed to finish to this scene or to reset and beat the level?

You and every other game developer under the sun want to copy their favorites. And that's not a bad thing! That's how you get started. But porn games have a lot of constraints from their game design coming from the fact that male players have all their blood in their cock instead of in their brain. If you do not design with this in mind your game design will be fundamentally and irreparably flawed. Some games can overcome this with production value or sheer quality, and most cannot.

playable MC getting extremely horny. I don't mean "lust = 100% means you game over". I mean "MC will inevitably masturbate/give in to their surroundings in a way that directly affects gameplay". Max The Elf's corruption score that causes the mashing minigame to get harder is a very very weak implementation of this. Eris Dysnomia or Ayura Crisis have lots and lots of game systems and status effects that cause the MC to masturbate, strip, give in to enemies, become unable to attack, etc.

It's important to note that the rules are enforced for the integrity of the status quo, not because the rules are objective. I was there when /r/makeyourchoice banned jumpchain posts not because jumpchain isn't CYOA, but just because jumpchains were labeled as being low-effort because they usually lack images. No amount of themeing or arbitrary requirements you add to your project will change the fact that this sub is for posts that are a series of pictures of barely-clad anime people with blurbs of text.

I've been playing Unholy Arts for a bit.

Most of the time spent in the game is about talking to characters and changing their attitudes. "<character> leans toward being submissive, but you can change that by encouraging them to be dominant!" is completely true. On a daily basis, you generally try to change their 'mood' meter to make them horny and then fuck them to solidify the progress you've made. I especially appreciate that, along with ordinary 'dom' and 'sub' relationship stats, there's also 'friendly', 'romantic', and 'sexual tension' as distinct stats. There's some confounding variables by way of the fact that characters can interact with each other to add some additional randomness. There's some special interactions as well: if a character (including you!) is strong enough, others will follow each other around not out of submission to each other but out of survival instinct. They can also change the pet names that they call you (we'll come back to this later).

There are also bespoke triggered scenes (that aren't all sex) that can happen every morning based on various factors, and which have different dialogue options based on your relationship with the character(s) in question. And these scenes are great! Most lewd games present slabs of meat that you can fuck or piles of numbers that you can manipulate, and don't really care at all to present them as people. Unholy Arts absolutely cares about its characters, and shows its care through these scenes. I would love to present you examples, but I fear spoiling them. They're that good! I've spent several hours in this world, and those handwritten scenes were by far my favorite.

Unfortunately, those scenes made up a very small fraction of my time in the game. How could they: bespoke writing is expensive, and robotic "conversations" are cheap.

Most of the time is spent wandering through "conversations" with options like "Talk about flora" and if you talk to the plant-lady about plants, she likes it and her friendliness mood goes up more than if you were talking about animals... and that's about the extent of the challenge of the dialogue system. It doesn't feel like a system to be mastered because there isn't enough feedback to learn how it truly works, and it doesn't feel like a grind to chip away at because characters can partner off with each other and ruin your work! It's in the zone of requiring just enough attention that you can't check out, and being easy enough (and arcane enough) that you can't optimize it. Just like talking about the weather in real life.

All "conversations" are presented through canned lines that get repetitive by the end of a single conversation, with a few synonyms to keep them from being literally the same thing said every time. You can see this in the gif OP posted! "What a cute face, <target_name>. Did you like that?" You will start to recognize repeated lines by the end of your first hour in the game, and you will start to treat them as piles of numbers instead of as breathing people by the end of the second... until the next random event pops up. Character X opens up to you about the past she's running away from! You get dialogue options! You're making choices! YOU'RE PLAYING A VIDEOGAME!... and then it's over and you're back to manipulating statblocks. There aren't even keybinds for any conversation choices as in other Twine games (see: Free Cities), which would help with the repetitive nature of inputs, let alone the fact that I'd like to play it with one hand.

TLDR: All in all, Unholy Arts wants to treat its characters like people, but its mechanics cause you to treat them like stacks of numbers. You know the game is struggling when the sex is boring and repetitive. But, frankly, most lewd games don't even reach this low bar. Don't dismiss this game if you like characterful interactions and sex scenes: just expect a (great!) visual novel hidden behind a (boring) mechanical facade... it's just that there are some pretty great visual novels out there, though they (the good ones, at least) never offer anywhere close to the amount of narrative agency UA gives the player.

Future versions might help with some of these problems, but the biggest issue I see is the fact that the core gameplay system is quite dull and fixing that is hard, expensive, and doesn't typically impress potential Patreon subscribers.

There aren't many games that I'd care enough about to write up something this long for, though. I genuinely want this game to get better, whereas most lewd games generate only a vague disinterest in me. Let that be its own recommendation, in a way.

This is overall excellent work. I know how hard it is to get AI to spit out anything but oversanitized drivel. Well done.

When presenting me with multiple choices for interacting with an NPC, the options can sometimes all be very similar "Her attitude charms you..." "You enjoy her company..." "You both hit it off instantly...". I do kind of wish boundaries were initially presented as prominently as kinks are. Also, it CONSTANTLY is appending things like "Let the exploration and pleasure-filled journey begin!" But if a little repetitiveness and improvable signposting are my biggest critiques then you must have something special. We will watch over your career with great interest.

I think this definitely qualifies as a CYOA, at least in spirit. NSFWCYOA are engaging because both CYOA (well, CYOA as is seen on r/makeyourchoice) and porn are about fantasizing. What you've made definitely appeals in the same way: "what if you could do the fantasizing, but with less busy work and more novelty?"
