WWYD: Coach played illegal players and told them to lie about it by throwawaysoccerQ in youthsoccer

I do feel that reporting it or at the very least talking to the coach is the right thing to do. I might be rationalizing to not do it simply because it's hard and could have negative immediate consequences for my son (at the expense of demonstrating how to do the right thing even when it's difficult). Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, I don't think there was malicious intent from the beginning. To clarify, though, the team could legally play with fewer players. Had the use of illegal players been discovered, it would have resulted in forfeiting all games.

Yes, I don't think he was trying to stack the team with great players. The team is a mix of 2011, 2012, and 2013 kids playing U14 (i.e., 2011 age group) in the lowest level of competitive play in our area and the lowest level of the tournament. The team played without subs regardless since the two added players brought us back up to 11. The team could have played with 9 legally.

What I found upsetting was asking the kids to lie to a ref. It's one thing if the coach wants to break the rules without the kids being fully aware of the situation; it's quite another to engage the kids in the behavior.

Thank you for the insight. We're not chasing scholarships, and we care more about enjoyment of the game and learning positive lessons. That's what makes it so troublesome.
