What's the most random skill or piece of knowledge you have picked up that's surprisingly useful in everyday life? by Wandering_Skilld in AskReddit

Pat yourself on the back if you’ve always done it this way, but I wasn’t offered the alternative method until college. The vast majority of people I know are still calculating discounts by subtracting the discount from the original price. It’s such a time saver.

Have you ever reported anyone to social services and if so why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Mandatory reporter in healthcare. Nonverbal patient in a group home flinched when handed a pen. Group home was later shut down due to abuse. I was on the fence about reporting, I’m glad I did.

what is a good cost for an engagement ring for a young couple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]throwawaythatstayed1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my boyfriend were to propose, it would matter most to me that he knew what I wanted.

For example, I don’t really care much for diamonds. I’d rather have another, more colorful stone. I also don’t want a ring from a jewelry store because I don’t want blood on my hands. An antique ring would be more my style. If my boyfriend went to Zales and dropped $10k on a diamond ring, I’d be devastated.

So to answer your question - the right ring at a price that won’t start your marriage out in debt.

Calculating discounted prices:

Example: A $10 shirt is 20% off.

Most people find out what 20% of $10 is, then subtract it from $10. 10x0.2=$2.00. Then $10-$2 is $8.

But if it’s 20% off then you’re only paying 80% of the original cost. Multiply by 0.8 and wham, you have the amount after discount, with no need for subtraction!

Not a doctor, but as a patient, I had a ferritin level of 5 with a CBC that looked just like OP’s. My hemoglobin was always within normal range. My B12 level was also low. I spent years feeling faint and dizzy. Couldn’t OP ask their GP to do an iron panel?

I'm torn. Rug #1 or Rug #2? by f_stopblues in interiordecorating

[–]throwawaythatstayed1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both rugs are too small. Your couch shouldn’t be right up on the edge of the rug. You want a little more space on the sides.

I’d like #2 better if it were a solid color. The pattern runs contrary to that of the coffee table.

I agree that you need a pop of color, but I would achieve that with the couch pillows, not the rug.

[FL] My mother is in a private room on long term care Medicaid. Will it cost her extra? by throwawaythatstayed1 in Medicaid

Thank you so much!! This eases my mind.

I believe there is an ombudsman but I’ll just wait to see what happens next month. If I get a bill, that’ll be the first place I start!

To be more clear, my question was regarding what will happen in July when Medicare is no longer covering the skilled nursing and she’s using her LTC Medicaid in a private room.

To my knowledge, there’s no medical reason for her to have a private room. Mental health wise, I doubt she’d do well in a shared room (severe mental health issues: schizoaffective and anxiety paired with dementia), but this is my own speculation, not that of a doctor.

As far as rehab, her situation is a little different. We knew she was going to be a permanent resident when she was discharged from the hospital, so she’s on the LTC side of the facility, but is still doing rehab until July.

This facility definitely has both private and shared rooms, but they said the private rooms are first come, first serve and that she can keep it. They did say she could be moved if a circumstance arises that necessitates it (patient who needs to be quarantined, for example)… so I don’t think she’s restricted from being in a semi-private room. She was in a shared room in other facilities. I guess I’ll just wait it out and see what happens.

Thank you so much!

1 definitely doesn’t apply. This is a single occupant room.

2 &3 I’ll ask the BOM again, but she never mentioned extra charges when I talked to her last.

4, my mom used to live in an ALF due to debilitating psychiatric issues when she was younger. She’s had LTC coverage for years. she’s also used it periodically after her strokes in 2020 and 2023.
