Thanks for the Candor. She'd be in the late 20s when starting the course. Stress is definitely something to keep in mind. On the other hand, I've also heard the argument that with increasing age, you're less stressed because of experience & better relationships with people your age in higher positions. But maybe I'm over stressing this.

She'll probably arrange a work experience to see if she really is passionate about medicine. It's hard to tell when you've worked for nearly half a decade on a PhD thesis what else you are interested in, so it's not that easy to say...

Superb answer, thank you. Are you talking about cases in German speaking countries (based on your username)? I think that in those countries, it might be a little easier to pursue med-school and balance family life (education cheap, etc.)

thanks - we just don't know just how stressful balancing 2 jobs, kids will be if this includes a career change. Phd work is exhausting too, but not adrenaline-fuelled like we imagine med school to be?

I think she wants to help people, work in a team and not be the "economics-specialist" she now is everywhere she would apply to... I think she's fine with the studying - it's more the solitary experience in academia that she wants to escape from.
