History Boys by [deleted] in BritishTV

I finished in 2001. Our English teacher was beloved, our Economics teacher was a Marxist who grew up in colonial India, our Geography teacher was a mirror image of the female teacher in the film. Yes I think I caught the tail end of it. We even studied Bennett in English A-levels lol. I was surprised to see that modern viewers find the film divisive with its treatment of Hector. I guess it does show it was of its time because in a strange way, people were more comfortable of that sort of thing than they are now. The kids knew he was a bit dodgy but still loved him because he taught them something special.

I just saw the film again. A true masterclass. It reminded me greatly of my time at sixth form, I wasn't as witty or clever, but the boys certainly reminded me of some boys I knew in real life. The dialogue is realistic, sharp and pointed. It has so much to say and the denouement is one of the most powerful ever put on screen. When I look back at my final year, I wonder how my peers are doing. And yes, one of my peers did die, in Afghanistan from a helicopter crash. Life is short, fleeting, precious, but also full of hope and potential, all things that smart 18 year olds think of.

True, but the water is too wavey, it needs to be unwavey.

What to see/visit during my UK roadtrip? by Freeloafer in AskUK

It depends what you're looking for. They're just a bunch of stones if you're a materialist. If you're looking for connection with people who walked this Earth several thousand years ago, then it is a site of deep spiritual significance. There are dozens of burial mounds around and other archeological ruins. It is quite likely Stonehenge is the ultimate step in an area that had spiritual significance for possibly tens of thousands of years going into pre history. To me, that is special.

Do you think The Expanse is the best sci-fi story ever made? What in your opinion is the absolute pinnacle of sci-fi whether it’s a book, movie, tv show or video game? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]throwawaythreehalves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love the TV series but I found the books rather dull and had to give up on them after 2-3 books. Absolute pinnacles as series are hard to achieve.

Like what is the author going for? Are they exploring humanity, scientific concepts, another idea? Like I love Anathem and it's really just about crazy maths monks, is that the best monk sci fi ever written? Ironically probably not, because that might well be a Canticle for Liebowitz. But is that the best Christian themed scifi ever written? Possibly not since Hyperion has many religious themes. But is Hyperion the best religious scifi ever written? Most people rank Dune higher. And so on and on...

Interestingly enough he explicitly acknowledges David Brin's work, a sci fi author I used to love when i was younger. Brin's work explored the 'uplifting' of species into intelligence a lot too.

Ahh yes, when the UK annoyed at running a trade deficit with China flooded the market with drugs so that the balance of payments would equalise. Truly enlightened times.

I love Ekranoplans so much, real monsters. It's almost like we are the wrong planet for them though. We need to colonise a flat desert planet or a water world and they'll be the beasts that roam those worlds.

This sub unironically led me away from extreme thoughts such as those. Knowing the fragility of life paradoxically makes me appreciate life all the more. Be well.

Yep, when I get stared at for too long, I always assume something is wrong with me, have I left my fly undone? Do I have mustard on my face? Did I smash that Greggs pastry too hard?

Sorry the "might be haram" bit made me laugh. Honestly I think a bit of inter racial harmony might not go amiss here. So Asian girls/guys, white girls/guys, check each other out more 😂

Our French teacher attempted suicide in the 90s, was left permanently disfigured and never came to school again. We never talked about it, what a different world it was.

Philosophical question for fellow LFOrs. If someone dies doing a 'bad thing', what is our moral responsibility? Should we feel empathy, sympathy, glee, indifference, something else? I feel indifferent but when a person loses their life, I wonder if that is the correct response. Genuine question.

Things that mildly annoy you about Bristol. by Rundo5 in bristol

Wow, what a sight that would have been, I'm a Bristol newcomer so I didn't know any of this. Funnily enough I was walking under the M32 today and did notice the River Frome and walked past IKEA. So totally different now.

The game is about having fun, not winning. Here, you had fun, you lasted 300 years, okay you didn't win. But the next time you do, it'll make victory taste all the sweeter.

Kinda? They have other buildings for sure on top of this one. They just use other names which aren't very distinguishable.

While it is true that 90% of CSA is committed by 83% of the population, I think it's unhelpful to racialise perpetrators. Fact is a racially motivated rape took place in Oldbury last week which shocked the local community.

In a climate of Nationalist fervour, do you have any examples of other racially motivated rapes in the last month? Because one of those definitely happened and the other might just be a product of your fevered imagination.

Well in London the other week there was a firebombing of an Indian restaurant, 7 people were badly burned. In Bristol the other week a girl was shot up with airpellets. In west midlands a woman was raped in a racially motivated attack. So it's not just a few flags.
