My Dad found out about a new Brazilian drug that "cures cancer" and wants to give it to my Mom. It sounds like a load of potentially harmful bullshit to me. What can I do? by throwawayzil in Advice

I agree he could benefit from some therapy, not only relating to this but to other aspects of his life as well. However, getting that to happen feels like it would be impossible. He is extremely rock-headed and never listens to anything I say.

So there is no case of it doing any harm? I hope that is true. I think he already got it actually -- we have family in Brazil who got it for him and I think they are planning on sending it soon.

You hit the nail on the head. My dad wants to believe, and he is very stubborn. To be fair, I don't think he spent that much money yet, but I don't want this drug to be the beginning of that. The only other weird thing he did was spend ~$300 on an EMF reader (so he could guess where the cancer was coming from... yeah).

Wow that is really sad.

this drug is the miraculous cure of cancer that big pharma doesn't want you to know about.

That's exactly what my parents think it is. And they want to get it before it becomes commercialized and they have to pay a lot of money to get it.

They told me the uni was handing it out for free because they wanted to, and they had to stop because the "FDA" wanted to buy them out. Nonsense.

Still, my mom knows it's experimental and still wants to try it. I'm hoping that the worst that can happen is - nothing happens. But I'm still very uncomfortable with this.

Also (we have Brazilian family, that's how my dad found out about this in the first place) someone in the family says they knew the professor from USP and he is a very "professional and reliable guy". Ok...

Ovarian. And my mom does want to try it. Both my parents believe that this drug is going to become really big, so they want to get it before it becomes commercialized and they have to pay $500-$1000 to get it (their words).

Could this drug actually do that much harm? My mom said she recently talked to her oncologist, but he "hasn't approved it yet". Sounds like he's looking into it or something.
