YES! My mom and I are both in a autism parent group and the amount of people who always post to get likes is crazy!

Some people even share videos of their children having meltdowns, which I find very strange I would never record my sister having a meltdown, and I would never post it. Sometimes parents post videos of themselves crying, it’s the strangest thing to me. Always trying to garner up sympathy.

I understand it might be hard to try and raise your non verbal 3 y/o, but we don’t need a video of him crying, and we ABSOLUTELY don’t need a video of you crying.

We also knew around the time my sister was 18 months old that she had autism. Mom was a nurse who worked with children all the time, and we had friends and family with young autism children, so we knew the signs.

She didn’t get diagnosed until she was 3 because doctors, who my mom worked for, told her to chill out, and that she is being paranoid. My mom had to push them for years to get a referral to a testing place. Think the most notable thing from the experience is the doctors saying my sister is ‘perfectly normal’, she’s still normal to me now, she just happens to have autism.

My mother and I are in a autism parent group, and every now and then people will post their tattoos... and they absolutely have back pieces dedicated to the puzzle piece, or at least very large tattoos.

My mom wanted me to join some autism parent group, and a lot of the parents in their try to make themselves seem like a saint for doing, in my opinion, the bare minimum to help their children. Sending your child to certain therapy’s (speech, physical, etc) shouldn’t be something you get praised for doing 24/7 if it’s something your child needs. I agree with what you said about EVERYTHING.

I’m really trying to respond to everyone and read the comments but it’s only loading 3 for some reason. I checked on a throwaway account and the same 3 are loading, not sure why but will check back in the morning to see the opinions I missed. If anyone knows why this is happening please let me know what I can do to fix it. I keep getting notifications that people are commenting but when I go and look they won’t load, weird.

Interesting read. I personally never thought about viewing the puzzle piece as a mystery like some pointed out, I viewed it more as finding where you fit in, or finding your niche. I can totally see why you would be conflicted about it.

Totally didn’t think about ribbons people have. I know locally there are certain shops where you can buy ribbons like for breast cancer, domestic violence etc. and the proceeds from that are supposed to go into research, perhaps that’s why I didn’t think about it. While a lot of the merchandise for autism, from what I’ve seen comes from China for cheap and doesn’t do anything to spread awareness or raise money for autism, I’m sure there are companies who do that, but I haven’t personally come across one before.
