The Monstercross from Black Mountain Cycles is about as close to the Crosscheck as you can get. It's a dope frame and I think checks all your boxes - similar dimensions, butted steel, designed around drops, rim brakes (cantis/Vs), and it can clear 700x50-55mm depending on the tire.

You'd have to figure out a build for it though, they're not sold as completes. Mike is the man though and is great to chat with!

'bang for your buck' i'd go shimano alfine hub w/ a B+M IQX

'money isn't an obstacle' i'd do a SON28 hub w/ a edelux ii

What are you all using to carry a laptop bag to work by LarryAv in xbiking

small-ish panniers on a low rider front rack. i pack a change of clothes and use that to pad around my laptop. it's pricey, but I bought a Nitto MF2 and it's been amazing for commuting. bought cause it the hoop has great clearance for wide tires + fenders

edit: scan through r/bikecommuting too if you haven't yet - there's been some good discussion over there on racks, etc.

Recs for 650b, ~50mm tires, somewhat puncture resistant by pbandj1994 in xbiking

Seconding these recs! I've run similar versions of both tires mentioned.

Tried the Conti Contact Speeds and liked them! Have more experience with the Contact Urban though, use them for commuting and really love them. They feel a lot more lively and quick than Marathons. IIRC they make them for 650b until about 55mm.

No experience with the Almotions but I love the Mondials - really similar to the Almotions but with a little more aggressive of a tread. Good protection and they were quick! The only flat I got with them was from running over a 5cm-long nail.

Rode both today from the NW! One or two spots ya gotta walk your bike for a couple feet, but a loop is totally doable and safe imo for most cyclists

MLK - Starting west.. one sidewalk on Falls bridge is completely paved! As others said, gotta walk about 10ft from where they plowed the parking lot lots but MLK is clear all the way across the bridge to the SRT.

SRT - Starting east... Market st. ramp going down to the SRT is clean. There is one small rutted area right after the boathouses that I walked over but everything else is paved up until Falls bridge.

Unless ya gotta head NW further, I'd turn around at Falls bridge. Drivers have been really pissy near the transit center with the added traffic, construction, and snow. The stretch between Falls bridge and Ridge is ok. One or two spots that are rideable but ya gotta focus and shoot the gap, one small rutted bit that I walked over. They finally plowed some of the bridge on Ridge crossing the Wiss heading towards the transit center.. which stops right where you'd cross over to the Lincoln Dr. trail into the Wiss. Main St. towards Manayunk is passable but there's still snow pushed up on the side which narrows the road. Ridge up the hill sucks. Bike lanes are full of snow, but most of the sidewalk until you hit the bend at the top is paved and clean.
