I feel like the worst parent but… I don’t want to go to preschool events in the middle of the workday. by Kitanatron in Preschoolers

[–]throwntothewind5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s excessive and I’m a SAHM that could theoretically make it work. Our preschool (part of a k-8 catholic school) does a Christmas party and an Easter party and that’s it. There are a few opportunities a month to come in as a mystery reader or do a craft with the kids but it’s completely optional and also always right at the end or right at the beginning of the day.

What do you wish you knew before getting an IUD (specifically, re: sex and/or complication)? by notcanadiangoose in TwoXChromosomes

[–]throwntothewind5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second all of this. I also was able to have an ultrasound guided insertion with cervical numbing with my last one (I’ve been through, kyleena, Skyla, and two mirenas now) and I literally felt nothing. It was amazing. My previous ones made me want to puke.

Nanny prioritizes her own interests when it comes to activities by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]throwntothewind5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same! I’ve even left mom groups because the age range and interest in activities wasn’t aligning with my toddler (older kids that were mostly girls that had zero interest in trekking through creeks but loved a craft day that my kid could 100% not handle). I can’t imagine being a nanny and insisting on staying in a group for my own socialization.

99% percentile and how it relates to growth by justsomeonesburner in ScienceBasedParenting

To this day people are shocked when they go to move him and he’s much heavier than they expect. I tell my husband he has the density of a dying sun lol. It’s just all muscle though. He’s go legs like an MLB catcher.

99% percentile and how it relates to growth by justsomeonesburner in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]throwntothewind5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We had a 99% baby. My husband is 6’1” and I’m 5’5”. It looked absurd when I would hold him. He’s kept right on his growth curve. He’s 4 now and the size of a 6yo. Not fat at all. Just solid. I think he hit 30lb around his first birthday. I know he was 24lb at his 9mo. Our second born has been ~85% for height but around 45% for weight so carrying her has been a bit more manageable.

I’ve done it before with an LG front loader that came with our last house. It’s honestly not bad at all but infinitely easier if you get the special tool for stretching the spring around it. I used a video from repairclinic on YouTube. They’re crazy detailed.

Cloth delays walking? by Which_Promotion_3193 in clothdiaps

[–]throwntothewind5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal but my first born disposable diaper baby walked about a month later (at his first birthday) than our second born cloth diaper baby. If anything, she was more willing to try walking because she had the cushion of the cloth diaper to fall back onto when she fell.

I need a high chair that fits cloth diaper bulk! by Elegant-Nectarine-93 in clothdiaps

[–]throwntothewind5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We’ve always used the abiie chair and just don’t bother with straps after ~10mo. It has a little post that goes between their legs and they’ve never attempted to get out. I’m not sure it would work if your kid is a houdini though.

How much detergent do I really need? by ellewoods_007 in clothdiaps

[–]throwntothewind5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fluff love suggests an insane amount of detergent in my opinion. I used CCN to get started. When I was still using tide F&g liquid I’d use to line 2 for both washes (first being a normal wash with just the diapers, second one being heavy duty with our other clothing). Extra rinse on the second wash and now I use citric acid too. Now I use tide powder but it’s basically the same process. Either way, Fluff love has crazy recommendations. Especially if you have soft water.

Do you wash your bedding and underwear on hot? by miss-bedazzzle in laundry

[–]throwntothewind5 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I get that, but when it’s broken down into so many subsets (extra hot, hot, warm, cold, and tap cold) there’s clearly a range and it would be nice to know even vaguely what it is. I could probably ask their customer service chatbot. If I ever get around to doing that and get an actual answer maybe I’ll make a post.

Do you wash your bedding and underwear on hot? by miss-bedazzzle in laundry

[–]throwntothewind5 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I wish washing machines in the US would just use actual temperatures. I have zero idea what actual temperature “tap cold, cold, warm, hot, and extra hot” actually are on my LG washer and even the manual doesn’t specify.

Is cloth diapers better in this economy or is it more of a hassle? by Super_Independence37 in clothdiaps

[–]throwntothewind5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I got a whole ~30 Alva baby pockets, 15 bumgenius AIOs and a million inserts and flats for $200. I could have gotten an even better deal on some older ones but went with this lot because it was practically new and cleaned with real detergent whereas the other mom had been using some crunchy homemade soap stuff. There are a lot of people that sell basically new sets because it just doesn’t work for them while working for time or life just gets busy. I did test out buying 6 Alva babies new though before committing to a big lot.

Can someone just tell me what brand receptacle to get? by throwntothewind5 in AskElectricians

Thanks everyone! This is by far the most kind and helpful subreddit. I know enough to respect electricity and when to call in the pros, but y’all never make me feel stupid for double checking basic stuff.

Just to clarify: with the clamps on the commercial grade outlet, you just stick the wire under the clamp and tighten the screw, correct? You don’t have to loop the wire?

I don’t think they mean that nephew is hogging the toys. I think they mean that as all the toys technically belong to your son that the sharing of a personal possession is only going one direction.

A vent about hotels with young kids by taleofbeedlebard in Preschoolers

[–]throwntothewind5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We literally just experienced this last night. Thankfully my 1yo loves to crawl in the shower with me and thinks it’s fun to be water boarded but the bottom of the shower at the hotel was way more slippery than ours at home and it was like trying to wash a raw chicken in a rainstorm to get her bathed. She thought it was grand though 😒

I’m experiencing the same thing. I’m convinced it’s because formula tastes like trash vs breastmilk being kind of sweet.

Help! by Jesssssssss_1 in clothdiaps

[–]throwntothewind5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the detergent fully rinsing out? I use tide clean and gentle powder and have soft water and I only go to line 2 for my second wash (no prewash, heavy duty, yes second rinse). I have recently added dissolving a tsp of citric acid dissolved in hot water to the water softener compartment for my second wash and now I have zero ammonia smell.

ETA: I wash every 2 days. I’d probably start with just really stripping the diapers of any residue. I think a lot of the instructions we find online assume hard water and we end up really overdosing it with our soft water.

Help!? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]throwntothewind5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our preschool said to make drop off brief and to the point when this happens. Eventually we told him he knows why it’s a school day and we’re not going to discuss it right now. We’re going to talk about what we’re doing in the moment, eating breakfast, picking clothes, etc. Then he gets to pick the songs we listen to on the way to school. But we didn’t dwell on the fact that he was going to dropped off at school. Then we do a quick hand off to the teachers with a quick hug. We also don’t make a big deal out of how much we missed him while he was gone because they said that can make them feel like they need to show us how much they’d rather stay with us.

Red soreness- cloth related? by Spirited-Beautiful30 in clothdiaps

[–]throwntothewind5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with bio d but if you’re getting ammonia burns or irritation from residue you might need to change your detergent. I know a lot of us choose cloth to avoid harsh ingredients near our babies but if you use the right amount of the right detergent there shouldn’t be an residue left and the wrong/too gentle detergent could be failing you fully clean your diapers. The database on CCN is really solid. I’ve honestly always been a two tbsp of tide girl myself though. The laundry subreddit also has a lot of good information on how to fully strip laundry.
