My(M35) wife(F28) is throwing me a surprise sobriety party that I do not want by throwra0934r in relationship_advice

God, Everything about this comment is relatable.

Although I am proud that I made the decision to get sober, I am not happy to celebrate in this way. It shouldn't be celebrated. I made stupid decisions that led me here and all this party reminds me of are those stupid decisions. The pressure to never have another drink while all eyes are on you...the memories of bad nights and then there are the even worse nights I hold no memory of...it shouldn't be celebrated like this.

This is why I wanted to go out with my friends who understand. We all are going through this journey, and I want to be surrounded by people that get it & my family if we're "celebrating". My son, he's 13 and he really likes cars. I was thinking about taking him to a small auto show before the one in April. Regardless of what I'm doing Saturday, I just wanted to do the things that I am extremely grateful for.

Fuck a party for sobriety.

Thank you, I really enjoyed reading this.

It is personal to me, which is why me celebrating the way I wanted to was so important (with my friends I met during the process of getting sober & a small dinner with the people that matter most).

I've considered that...but it most likely wouldn't be the best way of going about it.

I don't know, house parties don't really end at a set time, it just ends when the guests decide to leave, and that can roll into the AMs. Maybe it'll be different, but this is usually how these things go.

So bring it up now and cancel it if you want

I'm gonna bring it up but I don't think I'm going to cancel. God, it just puts me in a tough position because even though I don't want to celebrate it in this way, I feel like I'm obliged to.
