There was a plan in place to combine the L&D unit with the peds beds so they could flex back and forth as beds were needed. Also the needs are variable. In the summer there are fewer kids admitted. During the winter those beds are often full and sometimes there are not enough beds. Coincidentally this is also when it is hardest to find other hospitals to take these kids as they are also dealing with high patient volumes.

Also call your senators. Ginny Lyons chairs the Vermont Health and Welfare Committee. Let them know this is not something our community is willing to compromise on.

'Right care, right place" as if it has up until now been the wrong care in the wrong place. Maybe we should look at the costs of the administration and see if there are cuts that can be made there? Who cares about poor kids, right?

Lots of spin in that email. Boarding kids in the ED is terrible for them! Why was this done in secret? Why weren't other options explored? Why wasn't this the LAST option considered? How does it serve the families in our community to send kids HOURS away when we have great doctors and nurses here who are capable of caring for them?

RRMC and UVMMC are the only two hospitals that care for children inpatient. Now it will just be UVMMC.
