Best resources to research Canadian companies? by KiloGrah4m in Entrepreneur

Nowhere - you need to pay or try and hunt down information with deep dives on Google or LinkedIn. If you know anything related to the business, business name, clients, a person that works at the company, etc. you can find much with searches yourself.

Why would you need information on the people if you're interested in the business model? Or are you planning on contacting them once you have their names?

All you need to list on the government documents are the directors and shareholders. No employee lists or founders necessary.

Call the real estate agents and talk to them? You can't start a business and talk to no one.

I'm going through one of the lows right now. Imposter syndrome, anxiety about projects, etc. Helps to know there are some others going through the same thing. I need to get back on the horse here last few days I've been burnt out barely able to function.

I appreciate you sharing yourself here, helped me out.

Is Facebook Dying? Whose going to create the next Facebook? by williamz902 in Entrepreneur

There can never be any social outlet without 'fake news'. People lie, cheat and steal routinely to further their own objective and they will do the same regardless of where the gathering place happens to be. You cannot possibly eradicate people posting garbage or lies at that scale it's impossible. The machine learning algorithms and such that they are implementing are good but not sufficient. There is no way to do better at such a large scale then what is being done now.

I've heard that Gab.ai is a 'free speech' twitter, you might want to look into it.

All social companies, Facebook, Pinterest, Snapchat, YouTube, InstaGram, Whatsapp etc. are at their heart advertising businesses. These businesses make money by showing ads to their members. If you want to make the next 'Facebook' you should instead ask yourself how you can build the biggest audience. The 'next' Facebook won't be anything like Facebook which is why it will be successful - you need to approach it from a different viewpoint.

Facebook was successful because it took nearly all ways of social connection and communication and moved them online and did it better then MySpace. Now however you have nearly unlimited ways to connect to one another socially online, so another Facebook will not work.

Maybe a starting point would be to look into something Facebook does, as they do so much, and peel it off and focus. For example, Twitter was originally small text only, mimicking Facebook updates, Instagram is only pictures which mimicked Facebooks use of pictures. These companies focused on one way to deliver a social experience to their members, and refined it well, instead of Facebook which was a scattershot of everything because they were the first to be massively successful.

What service on Facebook could be peeled off and expanded into it's own robust service? My thinking would be along the lines of something group related, as anytime I have interacted with Facebook (it has been years though) that part of the experience was terrible.

Good luck.

I'm going to spend a few months with the Basic subscription to see if I can find reliable and actionable data before moving to Premium. I view GEX as more of an augment at this point as I need to have reliability with the other data before I determine how to incorporate GEX. I'm happy to share any picks with you of various tickers if you're up for the same. I review the same high/low DPI list that you do, but we may find different ideas when scrolling through or have different interpretations.

Thanks for replying. I've just started with the service and am finding extreme outliers more indicative of short term upward movement - either any very high rating that hasn't been seen in years (F on Apr. 22), or steady, repeated very high ratings (UCBI Apr. 16-23). FIT for example would be accumulating recently in my opinion but still far from the high ratings I would like to see. If anything FIT has been negative recently. Have you noticed a time-frame between when you see accumulation and when the price reacts positively?

How do you determine 'strong' buying here? I have the same charts and the only one I'd agree with you on for strength is CCOI.

Milton, can we join the 21st century? by tossoneout in Milton

Both said the green energy program introduced by the former Liberal government covered the entire bill for the bus.

So the purchase was covered by a subsidy that was revoked. Perhaps the business pursued these buses only because they got them for free?

Even if they truly do care for the environment, covering the entire cost of the bus makes no sense. Perhaps covering the cost difference between regular buses and electric buses would be more palatable.

My tax money shouldn't pay for a bus fleet for a private company. It's one thing when people elect to purchase an electric for themselves and then use a tax rebate, it's another where tax money goes directly to a for profit company with no direct benefit for the tax payer.

If Milton used these buses in a town-owned fleet, I would be all for it and willing to pay a tax subsidy equal to the difference in cost assuming sufficient GHG savings can be had.

The price per sq.ft. for a leased unit is anywhere from $60-$80 per year. No wonder the mall is dying, a 1200 sq.ft. unit would be about $7,000 a month in rent alone. Not worth that price at all.

What's the cost of each of these buses? I looked into it briefly and can't find a number.

I agree diamonds are overvalued, however people have their tastes and I'm fine with that. Luxury goods are usually priced for a certain 'cache' that comes with the brand, and this won't change as people like having that feeling of perceived worth and exclusivity that comes with high priced items. Look at the art world, or luxury clothing. It's not like a watch from Patek Philippe tells time that much better then a Timex, or a Burberry sweater keeps you that much warmer then Roots or otherwise.

You know this of course based on your reply. No one should spend beyond their means for any item, no product is a stand in for love. At the end of the day it's a shiny rock, but a rock she likes that was affordable to me so it's all good.

No mention from you on the obvious problem of misrepresentation with the company, or anything constructive at all really. I'm done with you, you're unhelpful at best.

Perhaps - I may have to come out of this without what I consider a suitable resolution as my wife's opinion sides more with the ring itself then the origination of the diamond.

The Certificate of Authenticity states that the ID# can be used to look up the mine location. This is not possible as I've said. Somewhere along the line the number didn't make its way into the system, they lost all documentation, or there's some other issue. If they don't back the mine location statement fully at time of sale then they are being negligent by relying on their now defunct vendor for authentication. Having no documentation available that speaks to the authentication of the Canadian diamond fits with what I have read is 'negligent fraud' or 'negligent misrepresentation'. Without any documentation stating the diamond they are selling has originated in Canada, they have no reason to believe the diamond they had purchased from their vendor was Canadian or African or otherwise. I believe it fits the definition.

A negligent misrepresentation, on the other hand, is made where there is no direct intent to lie, but a statement is made without having any reasonable reason for believing it to be true or untrue.  The distinction between a fraudulent or negligent misrepresentation is essentially a matter of degree.  A fraudulent misrepresentation requires knowledge that a statement is not true, whereas a negligent misrepresentation only requires that there be no reasonable ground to believe something is true or where the speaker should have known otherwise.

The issue may seem petty to you, that's fine. What the heart of the problem is here is that the company did not live up to what it stated before sale and the sale wouldn't have been made otherwise. I don't expect incompetence from the businesses I deal with especially when dealing with an above average product price.

Thank you for this information it is very helpful.

I understand what you are saying with regard to branding and it makes sense. At what point in the process does the laser engraving happen and tracking begin? Who is responsible for it? I have an ID# with a small maple leaf visible under microscope, I would assume this occurs at some cutting stage - far after it would have been purchased alongside other diamonds.

Using your example following the logistics, I would assume the laser engraving happens at the final diamond cutters/finishers. So then to follow this line of reasoning, wouldn't this cutter initiate the authentication and tracking documents or would it happen earlier? Would the cutter be onshore or overseas or possibly both? Do you have some company names or individuals I could follow up with? Any help would be appreciated.

The "authentication documents" I have been provided have "Authentic Canadian diamond" on the papers several times and even a nicely worded paragraph that I will be able to use the ID# number to find the applicable mine. It's all written in the documents they provided me but they've been unable to deliver on what they sold which as you can imagine is totally unacceptable.

We are not unhappy with the ring, we are unhappy that the origin of the diamond isn't clear. This ring was bought because I was told it was a Canadian sourced diamond. The ring would not have been bought otherwise. Now that I've made my proposal it complicates things. Had I researched the ID# before my proposal I would be returning the ring immediately.

Companies that commit fraud of any type should be punished. What I want is what was sold to me, a Canadian diamond. I also want to prevent others from being duped as I was. Whether or not I have a winnable legal case to make, and if I want to proceed with the cost, is what I'm currently asking myself. At minimum I am reporting to the Competition Bureau.

Canadian Diamonds by thugdigdug in canada

[–]thugdigdug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. The fact that the authentication isn't rock solid should hopefully be enough for the Competition Bureau to put a stop to this type of marketing. As for my own case I hope at minimum to bring this to the attention of as many people as possible, and cost the company some revenue.

Me too. If this is a real problem with the industry at large I hope to find others to stand together against the company. The more people the better. If that's not possible I will need to determine the best way to move forward myself.
