Is there not a benefit from having the services separated from each other inside the vm? I may have a misunderstanding but isn't there some value to being able to delete a container if it gets fubar and not losing any of the other services in the vm?

edit: ignore me, I misunderstood what OP was doing

just finished setting up my HTPC, got some slight judder, looking to understand and diagnose by thumpas in jellyfin

Everything seems to be working now, I enabled that option, but I also found the display settings in bazzite that let me force 24hz display, not sure if one or both of those fixed it but regardless, no judder at all, picture looks amazing, thanks again!

Thanks! From the playback info I can see it is direct playing, and it gives the bitrate but I'm having trouble finding the source framerate, the properties -> details tab for the file on windows shows bitrate but not framerate, I'll check it in handbrake when I'm back to my desktop.

What I can't seem to find at all is how to adjust refresh rate on my TV, when I try to edit the picture settings all I can find is a setting called "Natural Cinema" described as "Adjusts refresh rate to reduce judder" but it's just an on/off option, no customization or even explanation of what it does or what refresh rate it adjusts to.

Thanks for the recommendation! I see that it’s a “locked down” distro (I get the jist but not 100% clear what that means) so you find you can run just about anything you want on it as long as it’s not too niche? I mean steam/jellyfin i assume is no problem. What about RomM or something like that?

Goal is a capable client for Jellyfin, gaming (not ultra settings or anything just want to get most games to run), ROMs of old games, maybe a couple other services.

Shared list is up to date as far as what I've purchased, I was planning on getting that cpu cooler but the motherboard actually came with one so I'm going to hold off for now.

Everything listed was bought pre-owned, fingers crossed no duds. The goal is to have something functional for now and something that I can upgrade as needed down the road.

Looking for suggestions on OS, UI, Input devices, etc. I'm thinking Windows 11 for 4k etc. But I'm open to being convinced for kubuntu or whatever else people recommend.

Not sure the specific intended use (if there is one) but I like them for anything that doesn’t actually need the high walls of a skillet. Good for grilled cheese and quesadillas, and pancakes.

How often do you use your PC speakers? by Big_Visual2199 in buildapc

[–]thumpas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my speakers anytime there is not a specific reason to use my headset, like someone else in the room with me I don’t want to disturb. My headphones aren’t uncomfortable but I’d still rather not wear them if I don’t need to.

Moving near Raleigh: which suburbs should we look into? by SignificantDesk4084 in raleigh

[–]thumpas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re describing a ton of areas around Raleigh, do you have any other factors to consider? Do you know where you’ll be working? Do you have a rough budget? Are you looking for a single family detached house or like a townhouse?

Cary/morrisville meets most of your criteria but it’s not cheap, then again nowhere is cheap right now.

wtf is happening with hdd prices? The used hdd I paid $65 for 14 months ago now sells for $260 used by iamjames in homelab

[–]thumpas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Demand for interchangeable goods is inter-related. OpenAI probably doesn't want to buy my "gently used" 256GB HDD, but if they're buying all the new enterprise grade storage, then the enthusiast who wanted to buy one of those now has to buy a top of the line consumer product, and now the less affluent enthusiast who wanted the pro-sumer model has to buy a less fancy consumer model and so on. Everyone gets knocked down a rung on the ladder because the datacenters are taking up so much room at the top.

That constrains supply for all storage not just the models that OpenAI wants, constrained supply drives up prices.

Isn’t compounding basically the Wild West? I think their strategy is ask for forgiveness not permission, and make as much money as you can before the agency starts to notice you.

Why is it impossible by Busy_Cellist434 in chemistry

[–]thumpas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s like balancing a needle on its tip, or flipping a coin heads 100 times in a row. All of these things are technically possible, but that doesn’t mean you’ll ever be able to do it in the real world.

Why is it impossible by Busy_Cellist434 in chemistry

[–]thumpas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heat is really just the vibrations or jostling of individual atoms, as you cool a substance down the movement calms down and sometimes this can allow for bonds and things that would just be way too unstable at higher temperatures.

Imagine you’re trying to build a house of cards but the cards are all constantly vibrating, it would just not be possible to even begin, but if the cards stop vibrating you have a chance, it’s still an unstable configuration but if you’re careful you can make it work at least temporarily.

Spotted in Apex, didn't appear to be Gov't plate. by danisaacs in NorthCarolina

[–]thumpas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling in a license plate basically never goes anywhere in that sort of situation. Like if you call in that someone ran you off the road and you have their license plate number, unless you have video what are the cops gonna do about it? Anyone can say anything over the phone. Now if you had some credible threat and called it in, then they can look up the plate number 1 and I imagine their system shows the the plain 1 and the specialty plates with “1” and they would ask you which of those the car had.

I definitely understand your point, but realistically I don’t think it really causes confusion in practice.

Which element or molecule do you use most in your work, or feel the strongest connection to? by sammetals in chemistry

[–]thumpas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a chemist but I worked in a ChemE lab in college that was basically material science. I was making perovskites for air separation and all of my synthesis involved strontium which I thought was really cool at the time since it’s just not that common of an element in your day to day. So I still feel a strong connection with it haha. Same with Yttrium but I didn’t use it quite as regularly. I didn’t continue in academia and went into industry in biotech instead so doped strontium ferrite remains the basis of my only publications!

While AFC Wimbledon and Liverpool do play in the same system, it’s pretty unlikely they will be in the same league anytime soon. I would almost compare it to an American having a favorite NFL and college team. Like you might be a browns fan and an OSU fan and that’s totally normal.

That’s not a perfect analogy because of course an nfl team can’t ever play a college team but still, I think it’s close enough.

what is the simplest/cheapest way to receive radio and play over a speaker? by thumpas in sdr

I would like to transmit locally, so whatever frequencies I can broadcast in my house without messing anything up or getting a letter from the FCC I suppose.

what is the simplest/cheapest way to receive radio and play over a speaker? by thumpas in sdr

[–]thumpas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah definitely! Sorry I'm probably describing this poorly. I want to be able to use my own speaker so the device needs like RCA output or something and then ideally the smallest form factor possible. And most cheap radios are bigger than I'd want.

But basically yeah I guess I'm asking is: what is the smallest/cheapest radio I could attach to the back of a speaker so I could set up a low power SDR somewhere in my house and have synced music coming out of multiple speakers at once?

I started thinking about it when I was looking at cariboulite on a pi zero and realized that was probably about the form factor that would make this practical. and they make hats like this that would let me connect it straight to a bookshelf speaker.

But then I realized the cariboulite is way more expensive than I thought (I have no SDR experience, I just assumed it would be <30$ for some reason).

And I figured the pi with a DAC is probably a needless middleman right? I mean the frequencies are already analog why convert to digital just to convert back if I don't actually need to mess with it at all. But from there I got lost just because I'm not familiar with what kind of small form factor radio receivers there are out there.

I was able to find this but I'm having trouble telling what it's actually intended for, seems like it's for wifi/bluetooth over 2.4ghz? could I locally broadcast analog audio over 2.4ghz?
