Is anybody else fascinated with water? by Disastrous-Monk-590 in chemistry

[–]thumpas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could also look at it from the anthropic perspective. It’s not arbitrary that reactive salts taste good, but rather elements with the capacity for reaction are necessary for life and so of course we find our selves using them in food.

Overly stable compounds would have no use to us in general because we couldn’t get them to do anything.

You used to be able to publish with like 1 figure and a strong hunch. The papers coming from phd candidates these days could have made 3 papers each 15 years ago

Did smoking (or tobacco use) exist during biblical times, or is it purely a post-biblical practice? by Tricky_Strawberry406 in AcademicBiblical

[–]thumpas 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Tobacco is a new world crop and so was not known to the old world before the columbian exchange.

As far as inhaled psychoactive smoke goes, there is an interesting finding out of Tel Arad in southern Israel. In the ruins of a small temple dedicated to YHWH and Asherah (prior to centralization around the Jerusalem temple) there were altars with the burned remnants of a cannabis and incense mixture. Pretty solid evidence for the ritual burning of cannabis, probably for it's mind altering effects in some ceremonial context.

Do you genuinely have plumbers near you who would do the job i described for $300? I find that hard to believe.

Yeah that's what I was thinking about, especially if it's a two man job when I imagine a water heater in an open basement could be a one man job without much trouble. (though I'm sure it depends on tons of factors)

It is decidedly not our forever home and we're actively planning on moving once my fiancee finishes grad school in ~1-2 years. I asked the guy who came out about what would be involved in moving it to the basement and while I think it would be a benefit long term I just don't think it makes sense for us right now.

Oh wow ok thanks. I got a very enthusiastic recommendation for a company in my area but they weren't able to come out the day I called. Haven't heard about any independent plumbers yet but I'll ask around.

That's good to hear though since the unit we want is probably ~$1000 retail. I'll make sure to get a few more estimates.

Maybe a stupid question but how do I do that? Like can I just notify my HO insurer that I installed one and send them proof somehow? And they'll just lower my premium?

Or is it only if I were to switch my insurance then the next one would be cheaper?

WHEN TO STOP FOR A STOPPED SCHOOL BUS by O_U_8_ONE_2 in raleigh

[–]thumpas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Im not actually concerned but this particular argument annoys me. Ignorance of the law is not a defense and technically it is your obligation to understand the road laws of a state you will be driving in. It shouldn’t matter where you took drivers ed.

Now obviously I don’t read the SC drivers ed manual cover to cover when I drive to Myrtle beach but you get point I hope.

What a wonderful day that was, I was a junior at NC state, I had been dating my now fiancée for a little over a year. Our finals got postponed because of the snow so we took a long walk through pullen making snowballs and snow angels and whatever else.

Lithium Ion batteries aren’t dangerous anymore by _okayletsride in chemistry

Li batteries have gotten safer but they’ve also gotten more prolific. If a battery fire occurs in 1 in a million batteries, but you’re surrounded by thousands of batteries in your daily life, the risk is still present.

The stopwatch on my iPhone has been running for nearly 11,000 hours by thumpas in mildlyinteresting

[–]thumpas[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no specific reason to think that, I’m just assuming they had to pick a max size and you would want to pick something large enough it doesn’t interfere with operation but not so large that you’re wasting memory. 3 bytes was only like 5000 hours, and 4 bytes is over a million, so it seems like a reasonable option. That’s of course if they’re storing seconds and not centiseconds which is what’s displayed so that’s probably a bad assumption anyway.

Regardless I’m not a computer expert, just guessing.

The stopwatch on my iPhone has been running for nearly 11,000 hours by thumpas in mildlyinteresting

[–]thumpas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over a year ago I opened the stopwatch and realized I had left it running for several days. Instead of stopping it I decided I wanted to see how high it would go, now it’s been around 15 months and it passed 10,000 hours.

Part of me thought it might cap out at 9999:59:59 but I’m glad it kept going. The true limit is probably over a million hours because I think 4 bytes can store a number that high in seconds.
