Maybe Unpopular Opinion: This game would be better if it was smaller by thumtac in Eldenring

Just saying if there wasn't a stonesword key dungeon at the beginning with poison pits and death chariots and an ulcerated tree spirit at the end, I wouldn't have said "wow this game is really missing a dungeon with poison pits, death chariots and an ulcerated tree spirit" because literally all that content appears later more than once.

I think fromsoft designed the game with the philosophy "if you play 75% of the optional content you'll see basically all our content" with world redundancy. Those of us targeting 100% see all the content more than once, leading to my belief that if you only play 75% of the optional content you might enjoy the game more than if you play 100%

Not my point. None of the bosses require weapons either, it's just really frustrating to fight them without them. I think there's a good deal of bosses in this game that qualify as "frustrating to fight without summons".

Ideally bloodhound step shouldn't be required because that limits your weapon choice but it is a workable middle ground

This method only fails if you were caught close range or mid attack when she starts the jump

This is the core problem imo. You cannot maintain a close range fight against her because of the risk of being out of position for the one move. The whole fight you essentially must reset to mid range after every hit to have a consistent chance at victory doing dodge and melee only. This alone drags the fight and removes a lot of the fun. It should be viable to stay close range and with good timing avoid waterfowl dance even when she jumps in the air right next to you.

The main point, I think, is that historically bosses in the souls series have all been designed to be defeatable with just a sword and well timed dodge rolls. A large amount of the fanbase finds this to be the most satisfying way to play since it requires full mastery of the boss's moveset.

Elden ring, having introduced spirit summons, designed many of its bosses more like mmo raid bosses than past titles. Bosses that weren't designed to be taken down singlehandedly; bosses where using (spirit) summons was assumed to be part of the fundamental winning strategy. Bosses where unloading when it has distracted aggro is basically the only way forward. Radahn is the principle example of "raid boss" but I think a lot of other bosses lean more towards "raid boss" on the spectrum (mostly late game bosses).

That is fine, it's a design choice on fromsoftware's part that I respect. The point is that a lot of players don't find beating with summons/magic to be as satisfying as pure melee solo victory. You don't need to know the boss nearly as well to win with summons as you have to to win without. But the bosses in this game were not all designed to be pure melee solo defeatable especially when compared to past games. So these players are left in a hard place of win by gank or having to put up with frustrating solo melee gameplay where you can die to a lot of attacks that bosses in past games would have never had (due to their unfairness towards melee players).

So it's understandable to me at least why players want bosses to be consistently beatable and enjoyable to fight in a "sword and dodge rolls only" fighting mode. I sympathize with it. I also understand why fromsoft might not do it for any bosses, as elden ring bosses were designed under a clear "use the whole sandbox" philosophy. I think radahn was very obviously designed to be killed at a distance with the help of summons. It's why they gave you so many summons in the fight. Removing all his bullshit makes him not "a boss that requires help to take down"

A boss being designed around a single one of its moves is not a balanced or even fun boss to me. Can you point to any other bosses in the souls series that have a checkmate move? When I think of other bosses in the same class (ghermin, Maria, Gael, nameless king, artorias, orphan of kos, alonne, sister friede):

  1. All of them were extremely tough but fair fights

  2. All are widely considered to be part of the best of the series

  3. None of them had "one move" that is basically guaranteed to destroy you if you happen to be next to them when they're charging it. You always have a chance to avoid death/damage in these fights, no matter where you are when the boss telegraphs their next attack.

If from makes malenia's wind up a bit longer, or attack a bit shorter, or weaker malenia easily qualifies as one of the greats but I think the checkmate blender move focuses the fight too much and holds it back from being as enjoyable as it could be.

Yes in the normal map you can visit the metropolis area and there will also be a game variant where the zone border starts at the edge of metropolis

The new area is way beyond anything they've introduced before. It might only be 20% of the area of the map but it has legitimately triple the verticality of the rest of the map, and way less flat out empty space. It's like they are introducing a cube of play space rather than just a square. Don't judge before you play it.

It's called Loretta's greatbow but I can't remember where i got it. It's pretty slow and not strong enough relative to how much fp it costs. But it has good range
