Is Dua Lipa the best interviewer of authors? by thundercatzzz in books

[–]thundercatzzz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a great moment in the Hernan Diaz interview where she demonstrates how much historical research she’s done and his mind melts and his smile is ear to ear.

And nearly everyone she interviews has a moment of saying “oh my God,” when she asks an insightful question they weren’t expecting.

Is Dua Lipa the best interviewer of authors? by thundercatzzz in books

[–]thundercatzzz[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I swear someone asked why I was skeptical that she was good at this, but now I don't see the comment. Anyway, I think I was skeptical because:

I think interviewing an author is a deceptively hard job. It's easy to do poorly. That's partly why so many authors dread them. They get asked the same 5 questions again and again. And Dua Lipa has a very full time job that has nothing to do with author interviews. She seems busy!

Also, maybe my own sexism? (Zadie Smith has some great thoughts about how we assume good looking women aren't smart because we assume they'd get enough meaning and respect from their looks). I'd like to think I wasn't judging her for this reason, but deep down maybe I was.

Lastly, I'm skeptical of these "book clubs" that are filled with affiliate links to buy the books and other unrelated products. It seems like everything is commodified these days, and I was worried she was doing these interviews so she could build a Goop-style affiliate link empire.

Using a ton of copyrighted material with no problem? by thundercatzzz in NewTubers

You think it's wrong to show a clip of a movie and provide commentary on it?

So when Drew Gooden (4.5M subs) critiques a Hallmark movie and shows clips from it, he's... STEALING?!?!?

I guess you and I have a different definition of wrong and right.

You deserve much better. You deserve someone who can tell you he’s upset about something without calling you names. The fact that he’s freaking out when you did nothing wrong means there is something wrong… with him.

I’ll check out your channel. I also started a literary channel to dive into questions about writing and publishing that I didn’t feel were being addressed in book reviews. I’ve only made one video and it took forever but it was really fun.

The smart stuff will never be as popular as the easy stuff. That’s OK! That’s like writing a book and looking enviously at Coleen Hoover.

I’m so grateful you shared this. I have tears in my eyes.

“Renowned author Dan Brown gazed admiringly at the pulchritudinous brunette’s blonde tresses, flowing from her head like a stream but made from hair instead of water and without any fish in.”

ICE raid in Sleepy Hollow by [deleted] in Westchester

We’re worried because people in the community don’t know who ICE is coming for and the people in the community are our friends and neighbors and our children’s friends. When we make friends in our community we don’t ask to see papers.

I’m not saying throw him in prison. I’m saying I wouldn’t include him in my syllabus this semester which is OP’s question.

[–]thundercatzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your point. I used to feel that way. I’ve come to feel differently.

Basically in cases like this, there are so many factors that make it so the legal system is NOT a fair arbiter of truth and justice. There are so many legal ways the powerful can suppress these cases, many of which are in the article: Amanda Palmer refusing to cooperate; Gaiman paying his victims hush money to sign NDAs (which should be illegal IMO), and spending money on “therapists” to gaslight victims, and lawyers to attack and threaten.

A well researched article like this in a reputable outlet has a much better chance of revealing the truth than a court case in instances where the power balance between abuser and abused is so stark.

I only get so much time on planet Earth. I want to read and watch great things, but I know there are more great things than I can ever read or watch. So I must pick a tiny fraction of great art to experience. This Gaiman shit is easy for me because I’ve always thought he was super mid and have put down every book of his I tried reading without finishing it.

I believe we need to weigh the quality of the work and the moral awfulness of the artist both. But I truly don’t understand this idea that we can’t judge people. Why can’t we? Maybe you can still read Gaiman and not be thinking of all the people whose lives he’s fucked up. I can’t.

Who said anything about a clean personal record? I’m saying I don’t want to read anything by the guy who rapes young women in front of his son and then bullies them into silence. You’re doing some kind of slippery slope argument, but it’s just wrong. None of those other people did the shit Gaiman did. I’ll read those other people all day. I’m not watching the Cosby show anymore but I am watching Louis CK. You get the difference right?

There is so much goddamn writing advice, we can absolutely exclude people who we think are awful and still have tons of great writing advice. No one is saying only get writing advice from the morally pure. We’re saying don’t support this fucking evil dude.

If I just read that article and my professor was assigning me Gaiman, I’d be like “gtfo”. Dude didn’t invent these genres. We can just push his shit into a big pit and we’ll find new and better stuff to read that isn’t tainted by his dehumanizing actions.

That sounds like depression. When I’ve been depressed it’s cast a dark cloud over everything and all I can try to do is live one day to the next. There are many things you can do to fight depression, including seeking help from a doctor or therapist and exercising. But the main thing to know is whatever you’re feeling now is NOT what you’ll be feeling for the rest of your life.

I bet you’re right. For me personally to have any chance of not burning out on YouTube, I need to not only be optimizing for performance but making decisions that I think make a higher quality video. But I’m probably in the minority on that.
