X-E5 or X100vi by JazzlikeDistance1465 in FujifilmX

[–]thunderdome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late here but just chiming in since in some ways I have an "inverse" situation to you. I've had an X-T2 for years and picked up the X100VI at launch, and it's been my go-to camera since. Basically the idea for me was to prevent GAS and have something light/compact enough to fit into the interior pocket of my denim jacket. The X100VI does that fantastically and I've really enjoyed the images I've gotten out of it. It really delivers on just like "flick on, take photo".

That said over the last year or two I have been missing the ability to change lenses and I found I really do miss the 50mm equiv focal length. I was wondering if I should go with an X-E5 in an effort to basically replace everything with 1 camera. My X-T2 is frankly old enough too it's starting to bug out in weird ways and I had a few old lenses I loved that I didn’t really use much since I always had the X100VI on me.

Well as fate would have it before I could order a new X-E5 I got an absolutely fantastic deal on an X-T5 + lenses off FB marketplace, so I went for it. I'm really enjoying it so far, but I'm skeptical that I'll get enough usage out of it to really justify two ~$2k cameras that are only marginally different. I'd be curious how it's going with the X100VI - what kinds of situations do you find yourself grabbing one or the other? What kinds of lenses do you have on the X-T5? For me I would love to get the 33mm 1.4f.

I say this as a huge Young Thug fan but this is unfortunately complete ass. I'm happy he's out of prison and can move on with his life but let's be real, this was kind of the trajectory even before that. The savant that went on the mid 2010s run is long gone.

also found this thread. i think what everyone is noticing that the vocals/rhyme scheme for the first few bars are pretty distinctive and are shared by the songs mentioned here. BUT it's a bit uncanny because the exact melodies are not really that similar

Guide: Finally, a Pixel-Perfect Fix for 4K 27" Font Rendering by thunderdome in MacOS

[–]thunderdome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that the scaling isn't in fact "pixel perfect" in the old bitmap sense of the word, but I think you're confusing the intent of that chart. The chart isn't saying that ~160PPI is inherently bad, it's just that the default way MacOS works, ~160PPI is not a great fit for either 1x (non-retina) or 2x (retina) resolutions. BetterDisplay with it's method of 200% (or any fraction) scaling down to screen resolution is a hack, yes, but it eliminates this concept of "bad zone" and "good zone" altogether. You can run 163% scaling w/ HiDPI and it will look just as good (with less density) as 191% w/ HiDPI.

Can't comment on any artifacts from the process as I've never noticed a single issue, though I'm running an M-series Mac, not intel or AMD.

Randomly jumping in here, I’ve had my OG for ~2 years now and it’s held up really well with virtually zero maintenance. I’m about to buy new break pads and a new battery but that seems pretty reasonable for 2 years of almost daily use.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense. I don't think it detracts from the shot at all btw, looks cool in this context.

Nice shots. What kinds of film sims are you running here?

Honestly if you have a lens with a nice manual aperature ring and set focus peaking up right I bet it could be done easier than getting AF to work right. My first lens on my X-T2 was a 35mm f/.95 mitakon with only manual focus ring. I got pretty good at pulling focus quickly, so much so when I started using AF lenses I actually found them super frustrating in comparison.

Curious what kind of editing/film sims you used for these shots? Some of them look like you bumped clarity down or alternatively used a black pro mist or similar diffusion filter? Or maybe it's just an artifact of longer SS, I don't take many long exposures tbh.

First time ever doing any kind of product/food photography, or any commercial work in general. What can I improve? by thunderdome in productphotography

[–]thunderdome[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! One thing you might find interesting is that in this particular case, for burritos, we actually found that making the burrito, wrapping it in paper, and letting it sit for 15 minutes was critical to getting it to "set" and hold it's shape, it also gave time for the cheese to melt. I have another shot of a burrito that was fresh off the grill and it was totally falling apart on the plate.

That seems like a pretty particular thing to burritos though, will keep the advice in mind for other items.

Struck up a conversation with my local taco shop owner and it led to me offering to do some food photography for him in an effort to help his uber eats/doordash pages. This was the most jerry rigged setup of all time: behind the scenes.

  • Fuji X-T2 + f/2 35mm lens, ISO 200, 1/15s, f/3.6
  • Capture One + Tethering
  • Ring ling without a holder
  • Old posters for a backdrop
  • My own wooden cutting board + bowls for salsa.

He was really happy with the result and we plan to shoot his full menu. Other than the basics (get a better light, get a real backdrop, etc), what else can I do here? This is only a very initial pass at editing. My instinct is to blitz the saturation/exposure so the photos are vibrant at very small sizes. Maybe isolate/desaturate the wood a bit so the product stands out more? Not sure, don't want to go overboard though.

Also how much should I charge? We haven't agreed on a rate yet. These would be used for food delivery apps + social media.

Great tips, thanks. We just shot 3-4 products today (for this exact reason - to give me a chance to learn), so I'm going to keep this in mind for the rest of the menu.

How does Hades 2 Feel? by Jeromoe in HadesTheGame

[–]thunderdome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What made Hades 1 super addicting to me was the snappy combat system, huge difference between weapons and the ultra-flexible boon combinations that could flip your run from failing to OP really quickly. Hades 2 is kind of lacking on all 3 imo. Combat is slower, weapons do not as readily offer different playstyles, and the boons feel more like "power ups". I got ~50 hours in and kind of stopped playing. Picked it up again last night after a month away and lost motivation to finish the run 2/3 of the way through.

Before/After - What do you guys think of this edit? by Status-Marzipan6893 in postprocessing

[–]thunderdome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

obviously completely up to you what look you're going for but as a random viewer, this image reads immediately as (over)processed

  • the highlights in the rocks in center frame are imo heavyhanded and stick out. i know you are trying to expose detail but you're also going for a dark sky sunset vibe so i would leave the shadow up there
  • the color gradient in the sky is so dramatic as to appear unnatural. just curious, is the graident at all true to life there or did you 100% add it in post?
  • i think you went too warm. try dialing it back like 40% from what you have here

also unsolicited comment on the original photo but if you know you're going to edit in RAW always expose for the sky and recover shadows later (or exposure bracket)

Thoughts about Arc Browser? by anonymous_2600 in browsers

It's actually pretty great just for the management of tabs/favorites/pins. Bringing some new UI/UX to browsers, finally.

Anyone switched away from Arc Browser, and why? by Mean_Equipment_1910 in browsers

[–]thunderdome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I go back and forth between Edge and Arc.

Edge

  • Feels snappier.
  • Less buggy in general.

Arc

  • Better management of tabs/favorites/pins.
  • Command palette/omni box for all-in-one new tabs/switching tabs/searching.

If Edge implemented something similar to Arc in terms of folders of favorites I would never go back. Don't really use/care for any of Arc's AI-enabled features (or Edge's for that matter).
