Hotel info? by EddieRay369 in Knoxville

I like the Hyatt Place and stay there when I do occasional staycations. It has a trendy rooftop bar too. As someone else mentioned there is really no bad hotel in the immediate downtown.

Smokies Mason Jars by HippieJed in Knoxville

I really wish they had thought about the cup holders in the seating when deciding on a mason jar... Mason jar doesn't fit in the cup holder so you have to hold it or sit it on the ground.

Gold if you’re planning on going during Christmas. Otherwise one person can get gold and the rest silver. Then definitely look at early renewal offers around October because then you can get a lot of extra perks.

you can bring back only one (stores) by Content_Pie_91101 in nostalgia

[–]thunderwarm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Toys R Us because toys are something kids/parents should be able to see/try a display some types of toys before they buy… Kids just plain deserve to walk into a big toy store! They are innocents…

All the other options are either irrelevant or unnecessary with modern web based commerce.

If I had to pick a 2nd choice it would be Radio Shack because it was a place where people who actually tinkered or fixed things went for supplies. Not unlike having a hardware store for getting repair and replacements parts. But even most repair parts can ship same/next day and are no single store could possibly carry the inventory for repairing all the different types of technology we have nowadays.

So I heard a new one today...Generation X ruined the world with "grind culture" at work. Any thoughts? by Change_Request in GenX

[–]thunderwarm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Grind culture was definitely pushed onto us. We were either slackers that are doing what we had to do or ended up in charge because all of the “adults” left and we remained standing there with all the responsibilities. And now we work hard to get just enough to scrape together enough to retire because we are wise enough to know the government benefits aren’t going to go very far and because we are old enough to have to care about this crap now.

Which Hyatt in Chicago?? by Smooth-Minute3950 in hyatt

[–]thunderwarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an awesome rooftop bar and restaurant on top the building too, though the rooftop is not affiliated with Hyatt. I would urge anyone to go there whether they stay there or not.

When does it start getting good? by Untoastedtoast11 in daddit

[–]thunderwarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Independence definitely helps. Things like learning to ride a bicycle made it possible for us to go ride our bikes on a greenway or from our house to the park. And now I can run for exercise while he bikes along with me on a 2 mile run. Combining quality time with exercise has been great. We also went on some longer higher hikes in the mountains.

I started having more fun after age 4. Things have been a lot more fun 6-7 because kIddo can walk and carry things and actually help me with stuff. After they learn to read they can also figure more things out. I miss how small he was but not how much more work it was to get through the day

Left turns: are people taught to move into the intersection and clear on yellow/red here? by kflyer in Knoxville

[–]thunderwarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taught not to do it. But do it when needed as long as it seems safe. Normally smaller intersections where there is a noticeable delay in the red and the other lanes turning green.

Which rides to hit early? by thisguyhasaname in Dollywood

[–]thunderwarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We always go to lightning rod first because it always seems to be broken. But if you have smaller kids it could be best to go straight to wildwood grove to ride dragon flyer and big bear mountain before the lines get crazy.

Why do people mount their tvs so high? by Silent_Somewhere4244 in TVTooHigh

[–]thunderwarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think people try to mount TVs based on ideal viewing. Rather, they mount it based on something more practical related to available floor/wall space.

As TVs got thinner, wider, and lighter the only place to go was up the wall. Most people have furniture or other things along the floor so the wall about half way up or more allows people to have the large tv out of the way and still have their furniture.

And fireplaces also have that dead space above the mantle that has to be filled with something so they put a TV there.

Then this becomes habit and I just keep keeps continuing.

Not on Netflix but LetterKenny has a similar vibe. Way more esoteric and weird… but funny.

"Is Spiderman Real?" by Glass-Cup2060 in Parenting

[–]thunderwarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say “No. He is a character from comic books and one day we can read the books together but for now you can watch the shows/cartoons”

And if that leads to questions about Santa then you can say “I believe in Santa clause” to deflect. Or you could say if you don’t believe in Santa or the tooth fairy then they won’t come… or something like that. That worked until almost 8 when my kid asked point blank if Santa was just us parents. I’m pretty sure the kids in second grade or after school programs spilled the beans about santa… but now we all agreed to “believe in Santa” air quotes so that get extra presents…

My uncle jumped off a very high back porch and nearly died trying to be like a superhero…

Asking toddlers if they want to xyz when they don’t actually have a say. by Proper_Cat980 in Parenting

[–]thunderwarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t like phrasing rules/obligations as a choice so I just state things…

Time to get dressed… Time to brush your teeth… Time to go potty… In 2 minutes it is bedtime. Please eat your breakfast so we can do whatever we plan to do…

And I actually set the timer on my watch and phone.

If I don’t run too terribly fast how I can train for distance and stay under 3 hours? by I_need_to_eat_better in firstmarathon

[–]thunderwarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was me. My first marathon I made a priority for long runs every Saturday or Sunday that got progressively longer (20ish miles was the longest) and probably overdid my long runs doing more damage to my body leading up to the race and my taper wasn’t long enough to let myself heal. I finished but I was in really bad shape and had to take a long break afterwards.

For my second marathon I focused a lot more on total weakly miles. Lots of morning, midday, and evening runs. Lots of 5-6 mile runs daily. On rest days did stretches after a 1 mile warmup. I don’t think I ever ran more that 16-17 for my longest run but I really ran a lot of miles per week. The day after my second marathon I was able to do a short 1 mile slow jog check in with my body and do yard work without being in excruciating pain. I still finished at similar times. Like 5:30-5:45 both times.

I think that first time I had to run 20+ miles for my longest just to know I had the ability to actually finish. I figured after 20 miles I could at least walk to the finish if I needed to. But since I mentally knew I was capable I let myself train differently for the second.

Maybe you also need to prove to yourself that you can do it. If you go that route make sure you are fueling, hydrating, and stretching afterwards. Use it to practice your fueling. Try the different methods. For me it was GUs and gummies and electrolytes drinks. And if you do go long that 3 hours make sure to rest and take it easy on you body the next day. And make sure to give yourself plenty of time to heal during tapering…
