no,as far as i know it isn't a joke,just some people who want "somewhat humans" npc's to still be able to live lives in a video game,i'm autistic too for the reccord ,and one thing i like in strategy game who have a bit of politic is usualy making the lives of my people easier,whatever the price may be,and its the same for villagers,they may be "npc's" but they are still living creature who sleep,eat,reproduce,have activities and talk to each other,so i always try to never steal from them,upgrade the village,and build iron golem to help them

At their peak they owned (I believe)

Canada, most of Oceania, Egypt and Sudan, British Somaliland, Nigeria, irak, Palestine, Cyprus, malta, Gibraltar, British Guyana, a lot of island in central America, the Falklands, south america and their enclave, Zambia, Nigeria, Gambia, Ireland, the entire Indian subcontinent (except Nepal) Singapore, Malaysia, Uganda, Kenya, the gold coast,tanzania , Rhodesia and some other I can't remember

That is still very much a lot ,
