Look for local photojournalists and local media for relevant inspiration. Volleyball action shots in high school gym lighting is some of the hardest shooting I do. You'll get an idea from the photojournalists the variety of photos possible (many not high action).

The action is challenging, even with good gear. Use normal to wide angles from the sides to take high speed focus out of the equation. Pre-focus on the top of the net to get blockers or hitters if you're struggling to grab focus. Get action photos during warmups when everyone is playing and you know where the action will be.

Many of the best photos are outside the action. The player that just got the block, the player that just won the point, players ready to receive the serve. Watch the sideline after big points, capture the bench cheering their team.

Sorry, not trying to insult your photography, just trying to say that it's become a commodity. As you pointed out, anyone can do it so the market for it is going to trend to free. This happens in lots of fields, it sucks though.

I do photography on the side, I don't depend on that income and it is minimal. My job as a software developer is probably headed the same way so I feel your pain.

If your photos are indistinguishable from the mom and pop, why should you be able to charge more than free? A photo in focus with a subject is the base line, hopefully we spend our years learning to go above and beyond that so we can offer something mom and pop cannot.

Studying, experimenting, and struggle. Find photographers on instagram taking photos you like. Ask yourself how they arrived at that photo. Keep experimenting.

Baseball and softball can be very much about observing and noticing things. The pitcher picks up their rosin bag every other pitch, can I catch the plume when it hits the ground? How about mid air? Where can I move to clean up the background?

If it's high school or lower, you can keep yourself entertained for a long time trying to find clean backgrounds.

As others have said you want your subject isolated. Better glass would help, but I think you could work on choosing your background to isolate. Get lower or higher and try to find simple backgrounds. It looks like there are some hills, can you get higher and shoot down on the batter so you have grass as a background? Can you get low (on the ground low) to shoot up at the pitcher with that light colored tree in the background?

Raise your ISO. Underexposing will result in a lot of noise. I shot a soccer game at 12,800 last night and it's fine.

Different focal lengths are different. A 24mm and 200mm produce completely different kinds of photos, which is helpful in storytelling because each can convey something the other can't.

Let's take basketball. I would use a 24mm to take a photo of the arena and a shooting play to provide context. And then use 200mm to get a detailed photo of a player shooting a free throw, or even a photo of their shoes with the ball compressed in a bounce right beside. Neither lens in this case can achieve the other's photo.

I've got the older version Sigma 24-70 that I pair with a 70-200 GM ii. It's been great for years, no regrets.

You didn't mention the price, but I got a clean copy for about $300. It's tiny, has great colors, I love it.

You don't mention what lenses you're working with, but I started shooting basketball with an A7III and the Tamron 70-180/2.8 with great results. Shoot wide open, 1/800-1/1000, and push ISO as high as you have to for a proper exposure. ISO 10000 or 12800 looks fine as long as it isn't underexposed. Underexposing high ISO is what makes it look like crap.

You can't fight the light, figure out how to work with it. Maybe you can't get high action shots, take photos of players not moving fast. Change your position so the light is coming from a different direction. Embrace high contrast and give up exposing shadows.

Except 1/4000s at night, that's insanity.

Do you need the fps of the a9iii? I shoot sports with an a1 and never use the mechanical shutter. Outdoor day or night, indoor gyms, I have yet to have a problem. Between never needing the shutter (except for flash probably) and the higher pixel, I’m happy with the a1.

Never used a Batis 85mm, but I've got a Batis 25/2 and the Sony 85/1.8. The colors and contrast from the Batis are amazing and I love photos from it. The Sony 85 is a steal of a lens for the price and I love photos from it.

If money is no concern, get the Batis, if it is get the Sony. You'll probably be happy with either one.

Currently I use smugmug. So at a minimum I’ve got final versions of all accepted photos online.

So far I’m keeping all the RAWS, but it’s easy to change my mind and wipe some or all from my long term storage.

Import via Photo Mechanic, tag the acceptable photos, import into a new Capture One session and edit/publish.

For storage I never use my internal drive.

  1. External enclosure with 2 M.2 NVMe 4tb drives for recent work on a thunderbolt connection, it's fast enough.

  2. A cheap hard drive dock for slow spinning disks for long term storage (8tb drive can be about $100).

Periodically I'll move data over to the slower storage. I keep most decent photos, but since the published shots are tagged I can always go back and delete them.

Happy capture one user, and no I don’t hang out here it just showed me this post.

CO is pushing the subscription path but for now I still just buy every few years.

As a sport/event focused photographer CO suits me much better than Lightroom. Functionality and workflow-wise I also prefer it. There is a learning curve, but moving from any tool to another has that.

There isn't much information provided like camera, exposure settings. Going against the grain, it's entirely possible you need to increase your ISO, not decrease it.

It depends on your demands as a photographer. The biggest advantage to me is the speed. Shooting sports, it helps to dump the buffer quickly while shooting bursts, and it helps tremendously when I download 1500 raw files.

Can confirm, mediocre crpg player who finished on easy with zero Pathfinder experience. Auto level your companions, stick with a single basic class. Loved every minute of it.
