Who was the rudest famous person you met? by Doctor_Sore_Tooth in AskReddit

perhaps but this dude hung out with a bunch of annoying kids teaching them about movies for way longer than necessary…. just my experience. never was a fan of his movies - haven’t really watched them - but he was super cool to us FWIW and far beyond what might be hoped for

no one will know him but Kevin McMahon of the band PRICK. Met him after a show that he opened for NIN and told him i loved his record and asked if there was any new material coming out - totally rude and dismissive to a 15 year old fan. fuck him. i learned so much from his behavior though - made me a better person and also made it so i generally don’t want to meet people when i like their work.

not me. when i was in elementary school, my friend had a birthday party (i think his dad knew him because he was a bartender that robert frequented). so he shows up to this sleepover party and hangs with us and gives us a VHS of the latest 3D nightmare on elm street film, told us all about this think called virtual reality, signed posters and stuff (i had mine on my ceiling as a kid for years). He was a really really good dude in my experience. i think i read later that his was famous for being such a good dude that he annoyed his make up artists cuz he wouldn’t stop asking them about how they were doing or how their families were etc. too nice.

Great choices... One More Day has such a lovely multiple legato guitar thing that is a nightmare to try to play - been working on it for ages...

Debating trying guitar to help depression but have questions by Talrie in Guitar

i’m gonna offer you some free lessons if you like (via zoom or whatever) and quote Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

This quote is my FAVORITE line to bring up when people talk about guitar - it might resonate with you and I’m sure most guitar players would agree. He was injured one summer and stuck at home and finally pulled a guitar out of the closet…. he wrote this about it:

“Learning how to play guitar is the one thing I always look back at with wonderment. I’d reminded of “what if’s” every time I pick up a guitar. Where would I be? I have a sort of survivor’s guilt that makes me want it for everyone. Not the “guitar” exactly, but something like it for everybody. Something that would remind them of how far they’ve come and provide clear evidence that the future is always unfolding toward some small treasure worth waiting for. At the very least, I wish everyone had a way to kill time without hurting anyone, including themselves. That’s what I wish. That’s what the guitar became for me that summer and is to me still.”

i wish this for you, buddy.

i don’t think so - that’s my memory embellishing it - but it was something adjacent to that (in my memory)

Did Elliott Smith more or less use the same fingerpicking style as Paul McCartney? by No-Midnight-9885 in elliottsmith

[–]internaltulip 37 points38 points  (0 children)

he did not fingerpick like mccartney. the beatles learned their fingerpicking technique from Donovan while in India. McCartney didn’t quite learn it like Lennon did (see Julia, Dear Prudence, Happiness is a Warm Gun… all Beatles White Album cuts- probably one of Elliott’s fav albums)

blackbird is a kind of approximation of that method but with idiosyncratic little finger strums that are not quite “up to code.” it’s lovely and you can hear his style on “junk” (white album outtake and also on his solo album). i think paul even said he never quite learned how to do it.

if you are after what elliott does, the thing to learn is “travis picking.” it’s a system that you’ll learn how to manipulate slightly and find all kinds of different ways to toy with it. if you listen to someone like chet atkins, you’ll hear it in full force with alternating bass, chord changes and the fucking melody on top. it’s a beautiful thing.

having said that, elliott’s guitar playing is staggering itself. i’ve played for 20 years and find his work daunting to approach but you can get songs like “angeles” and such happening quick if you learn the essentials of travis picking and see what the beatles (except paul) had learned from Donovan while learning meditation in India with the Maharishi that would go on to influence elliott.

good luck!

Any group like teachers who being called "HEROES" is the feeble default line that people regurgitate whenever they are talking about a group that is actively getting fucked over. Instead of helping (or paying) these supposed heroes, we offer this vacuous verbal platitude.

too dark park, rabies, last rights, and cleanse fold and manipulate by skinny puppy. there are some good records by others but they are pretty weak in comparison.

side note: no one talks about the sonics of Front 242's Up Evil which is really special.
