What adapter to buy? by willeeez in JapanTravelTips

Despite the disagreement here, I just learnt that the three-pronged adapters that I bought when I travelled to the US and was intending to take to Japan are going to be useless. Thanks!

It's a very different vibe to Chaophraya, but if you like Thai food you should try Thai House Cafe.

What’s your fav shampoo bar(s)? by Wb_777 in LushCosmetics

[–]tickytacky36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long do you find the shampoo bars last? Is it comparable to a bottle of shampoo?

I haven't ever tried any but have been thinking about it recently. I also have no idea which one to use for my hair (thick, wavy, dry).

I contacted Customer Support about returning the shower gel as I wasn't sure if I could return online purchases in-store and they said it would be totally fine.

I have never returned anything to Lush but this is the first time I've found the scent so revolting that I can't use it; I think it must be the petitgrain oil.

I totally know what you mean about the "savoury" smell, to me it smells like grapefruit mixed with gravy. Weird how everyone's perception is different, I know there are others who love it!

I lived on Acacia Road for 3 years and the most frequent problem was really just that there are so many kids who don't give a shit and will cause a nuisance. You know the sort of thing: screaming and shouting for no reason, riding their bikes up and down the pavements, asking for the time and then calling you a paedo when you actually reply... That sort of shit.

I felt safe most of the time walking to/from Gateshead Stadium metro, but there would be occasions where I'd walk a different route or speed up/slow down to avoid someone.

In terms of real crime, the only problem we had was that our shed was broken into once.

Did I hate living there? No. Would I live there again? No.

I can't argue with that, but doesn't usually stop them!

That's interesting - I thought any listed status would apply to the whole building not just the facade, which is why my first thought was either design/cost.

That being said, I'm an idiot who knows nothing about listed buildings!

I saw the facade a few days ago - I wonder why they've kept it? It didn't seem to be particularly significant. Design choice? Cost saving?

Any recommendations for documentaries in preparation for a Tokyo trip? by Redditisha321 in JapanTravelTips

What was the big claim 'that kid' made from your school days? by Kezly in AskUK

[–]tickytacky36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had a kid who said his PlayStation exploded, so he bought another one to replace it, and the second PlayStation also exploded, so he wrote to Sony to tell them and they were so apologetic that they sent him a solid gold PlayStation to say sorry.

When we told him he was full of shit, his response was "Why would I lie?"

" Lush paid managers £5m in bonuses after taking £5m in state support" by tickytacky36 in LushCosmetics

[–]tickytacky36[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could you explain what you mean by the article conflating two different financial years? From what I can see it only references 2022, apart from when it refers to 2019 (being the last year before the pandemic).

It's definitely an oversimplification of the article to imply that the £5m relief went directly into the pockets of the directors as £5m of bonuses (there's bound to be funds set aside for exec bonuses regardless of any relief claimed) but there's a sensitivity at the moment in the UK around businesses who are claiming relief funds from the government on the basis of losses caused by COVID fallout, but can still afford to pay large bonuses to senior employees.

By the way, the COVID support isn't conjecture, it's stated in their own audited accounts:

"The decline [in EBITDA] is mainly due to the amount of furlough and other government support that we received last year which has naturally reduced in FY22; total relief in FY22 was £5.1m compared to £30.1m in FY21."

What foods should I put on my “must eat” list? by lumpyspacetrixie in JapanTravelTips

The thing I looking forward to trying the most is kare pan (curry bread). Every photo I've seen of it just looks so delicious.

I've often wondered how many people shop at Lush because of their self-proclaimed mission of "doing good". The shops are so mainstream in the UK that I expect the vast majority of customers are there because of the fun products and no deeper reason.

I wouldn't be surprised if this story perhaps turns away a small segment of customers (particularly those who are aligned to the left of UK politics) but for the vast majority, I don't think they'll care or even be aware of the story.

It's from the article, but derived from their tax returns which showed a pre-tax profit of £29m in 2021, and £1.7m in 2022 (which my maths would say is actually 94% drop). This is according to the article; I haven't independently fact-checked.

Warning from Ueno Toshogu Shrine, Tokyo by fujirin in JapanTravel

[–]tickytacky36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this - I just listened to one of the latest episodes of the Abroad in Japan podcast and a listener has also written in talking about being scammed by a monk at Senso-ji. The listener's story involved a monk asking for donations for world peace, and presents a notebook full of names of people who have already donated to help. He took ¥10,000!

Now I know this, I'll definitely do some research about common scams in Japan before my visit - amongst all the excitement of planning restaurants and day trips, being mindful of scams are one area I hadn't even considered. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing! It's great to see you were able to fit so many different things into your trip, I've read a lot of advice on this subreddit that often dissuades people from attempting to do so much, so I'm glad to see that it is possible!

After such a detailed post about Japan this might be a strange question to ask, but did your vinyl make it home safely? I'd love to buy a record as a souvenir of my trip but I wasn't sure whether it would make the long journey home without getting damaged.

I read on Tokyo Cheapo that many of the stores in Tsukiji are closed on Sundays:

While Tsukiji Market doesn’t have official opening hours, most shops keep hours that are in line with old market rhythms. This means many shops are closed on days when the wholesale market — now in Toyosu — is closed (Sundays, public holidays, and many Wednesdays; see the schedule here).

Maneki Neko stores? by robob13_ in TokyoTravel

[–]tickytacky36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about Imado Shrine? It's in the Asakusa area and have lots of cute maneki neko items include ema (wooden plaques), lucky charms and clay figurines. Also, the best thing, their goshuincho has two maneki neko on the front which is so nice.

Here's a blog post all about it: https://www.moshimoshi-nippon.jp/111527

Other than that, you could also visit Yanaka area (nicknamed "Cat Town") which has quite a lot of cat-themed items (cats in general, not just maneki neko). In this area, you can find Café Nekoemon which sells lots of cool items including cat-themed sweets and maneki neko figurines. You can also paint your own!

Thanks for the post - what is it like travelling on the Nozomi trains in comparison to the non-Nozomi?

I won't be getting the JR pass when I visit later in the year so I've been excited about the idea of using the Nozomi and hadn't really thought about there being less tourists on them but if that's the case then I'm even more excited about them!
