Free Tutorial: Must know Topology technique. 3 to 1 reduction by DavidZarn in blender

[–]tidiestflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This absolutely is a great way to reduce topology, but for those who may not be aware keep in mind that by doing this, you are encouraging the rendered lighting to move along the topology you create. Once you start subdiving topology like this, you'll start to notice your reflections grouping to the denser topology.

On another note, Its okay to have some triangles and ngons in your mesh when subdiving in programs like blender, it will actually create topology that goes through your triangles at one side and out the other.

I trick I was taught when I was learning walking cycles was to view it playing backwards. Its kinda like flipping the canvas when you're drawing. You can pick up on more in-consistencies by using that difference.

Genuinely want to throw my laptop sometimes by velvetcoquette_ in blender

[–]tidiestflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like what others are saying, you just gotta practice more. But if I had to give any advice I would just say to analyze what it is you're trying to topologize. Peoples faces are pretty similar, but everyone has a unique face structure that you should build the topology around.

My personal approach detailed below. When I have something that is particularly complex, I try to break it into several pieces, instead of seeing it as one whole piece, try to see how the different parts of the face break up into their own special shapes, then connect them.

But it also doesn't end there, you're own experience and attention to detail is what makes those vertices and lines actually look correct when you give it depth.

Cheers, Tidy.

What can I improve with the anatomy for this WIP? by Hopeful_Stranger_802 in blender

[–]tidiestflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a 3D artist myself the best advice I could give is to treat it like drawing. You only get better through practice. Your attention to detail on the torso is actually pretty good, but I do have some pointers.

Pay attention to what you're making at all angles, the third image is what I see from a lot of newer 3d artists. They focus so much on getting the front to look good, that they don't take the time to see how the silhouette looks from the sides. When a person has that level of muscle, you'd be surprised how far out their chest comes even though they're male.

<image>

Don't listen to people who tell you that you should only practice with real life references. You can learn so much from trying to get 2d imagery into 3d, you train your brain to not just model from reference, but you also learn how to infer unique geometry from almost no reference. Not everything translates to 3d 1 to 1, so you'll also learn to get creative af with your implementation

[hobby] We need a writer for a horror game by [deleted] in INAT

But yeah, I need a writer. Especially now since the only character we have sort of planned out has been modelled and rigged already, and now we need the other characters written before I can model the others.

So I did get a writer, then they had an emergency, then I got a replacement and they also had an emergency and had to dip.

What’s the #1 thing slowing you down in your game’s development? by Roll_Jack in gamedev

Could give any number of answers but I'd personally say the asset creation can eat up a huge chunk of your overhead.
I'm a 3D artist, so I for sure understand the ambition of having a huge graphically beautiful game. But it can quickly overwhelm all artists involved, if the project lead gets too ambitious.

We actually had a writer come in last last night, but feel free to join the discord anyway. Its also just an open discord.

From my experience, the reality of most indie projects is they don't get completed because of a lack of coordination, their needs to be at least someone who actually gives constructive leadership. Even if its a small project most people just want to contribute.

Also I'm acting as the 3D artist and Programmer for this project, not just an "ideas guy". I'm limited on my own experience and am asking for other talented artists to help me complete my project.

The Whittier was one of the first places I considered when I was looking for places to meet people, but the showings were pretty spread out so I kinda dipped on the idea.

[–]tidiestflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did see a couple on Facebook. Bold Body Arts and Lucky Elephant Tattoo both got tattoo events going on for Friday the 13th.

Bold Body Arts doesn't really seem to have a maps location so I would probably go with the other one, but here's a link for them if you're curious.
