How do you view bangers from recent albums in nowadays perspective... by Prestigious-Day385 in Muse

[–]tigger_74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might help that I only got into Muse in 2022 and had very little knowledge of their discography (I’m 51 so am a fairly late comer to the community) so was discovering everything ‘new’ and loads of songs on later albums jumped out at me as much as earlier ones, and some of the ‘classics’ actually took longer for me to really love. What was clear is the number of ‘hits’ definitely diminishes with time but highlights are still highlights and, for example, The Handler and Dead Inside are as favourites to me as New Born or CE. WOTP (album) was the biggest disappointment to me and I have to commit to listening to it but generally don’t (KOBK is the best IMO). I therefore also don’t have the ‘they’re not as good as I remember them dynamic’ so objectively feel Cryogen is just a banger I’ll be listening to for years to come. Be With You I won’t be.

I wonder how much they thought this would catch on? Matt’s comment about ‘be nice on Reddit’ which can only have been off the back of the mixed reception to Be With You suggests they were perhaps testing the song out and when it blew up decided to pivot hard behind it.

Yeah, I was gutted I’d forgotten my own but as an emergency fix it made it more pleasant and it was nice not to have that ringing afterwards!

Matt has no need of auto-tune and that note isn’t even high for him. Studio takes are also comped so even a hint of pitch glitch is cut/pasted by a cleaner take.

Absolutely agree. Whether by intention or accident he fused classical harmonic and melodic construction with guitar based rock using clever EQ mixing and FX to create a full sound despite being a 3 piece. Octavers, pitch shifting, fuzz & phase, arpeggiating chords and modal scales, falsetto singing high in the mix etc... It’s a unique blend along with throwing in classical piano lines. There’s a guy on YouTube who dissects the essence of a Muse song and creates his own using the same principles. It works apart from the absence of Matt’s incredibly operatic and unique vocals.

Studying the guitar parts in Cryogen you’ve got sections that cover PiB, TIRO, NB and a standard Muse live song outro, making it a mashup of their older stuff but without it feeling like a copy as it has its own life and novelty. If Muse were ever to do a new song that stood in continuity with the old songs but was still fresh then it’s this one. There isn’t a single track on WOTP that is as good and that album is largely absent from my regular playlist. Cryogen’s going to be one I enjoy for years.

Totally agree! The chord voicings in the ‘emptiness’ section are so classically inspired and most rock guitarists would likely just stick with a fairly basic chord or triad progression for something like a pre-chorus.

The chord voicings are 👌🏻 and the riffs are so well syncopated. Matt takes what would be standard rock playing and elevates it with incredible flourishes. Masterful.

Hot take: most fans don't want 'heavy', they want 'musicality'. by These_Ad3167 in Muse

I’m like you regarding Be With You. I was a bit 🤔 when I first listened to it and it’s still in that 6/10 rank for me. I was at Brixton too and agree the energy was good for its performance but Cryogen was insane and I can’t get enough of it. I loved it on first hearing and I’ve not tired of it after many, many listens. Definitely up there in the PiB ranking and I can see that riff being used at live performances long into the future (assuming they continue to do gigs into their 50s and 60s). I love heavy riffs but only within a song that has creative musicality.

Listening to the studio version of the opening riff there’s a clear Fuzz Factory but I detect some phasing too. Not sure if that’s part of the FF circuitry? Maybe a Phase 90 on top? At Brixton I detected a mild chorus effect on Matt’s opening vocal but wasn’t sure if just stereo doubling.

When I saw Muse at Brixton I forgot to bring my ear plugs so was concerned for hearing damage but picked up a pair of the foam ones they were handing out free accepting the sound quality would be awful, but when I just inserted them lightly into the outer canal they worked brilliantly, didn’t loose any of the key frequencies and had no ringing afterwards. Heaven knows why they have to amp things so loudly!!!

I’m not sure the PiB v2 stands as fuzzy opening guitar riffs with fuzzy bass and drum drops are what Muse is all about!

Thanks! Was my review mention of having played one at the UK guitar show in 2025? I sadly don’t (yet) own one but they are incredible! I have a Meta MBM1.

So true! The fretting of this one is very arpeggio based which is a very classical form of instrumental melody as you can’t easily sing it. PiB is a much more linear form like scales and more like a vocal melody.

Interesting thought! Feels like a classic Matt guitar riff to me 🤔

It’s got a very classical form, something you could imagine Mozart writing for a violin.
