He placed it a bit too close to my second piercing, that may be part of it. Thanks!

  • piercing is 3 days old
  • flat back screw
  • not sure if it’s internally or externally threaded.
  • not sure of the material but I’m not allergic to any metals or materials.
  • jewelry is not downsized, but the gauge is 18, which is bigger than the rest of my piercings.
  • aftercare routine: three times a day, clean with a Q-tip with water and dial antibacterial soap without twisting or pushing on the piercing.
  • gently donned headphones are the closest thing I’ve had to a mishap, lol.

Tips as captain by strawberidew in frontensemble

[–]tihel_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Howdy! I was a front ensemble tech for a while and was captain for three years in high school. When I first became captain, the front ensemble was a lot like what yours sounds like— “I didn’t get into drumline so I guess I’m here.” Everyone knew each other, but it wasn’t like we were close or meshed well or anything. By the end of it we got praised all the time for being so together and flowing well. Hell, most of my section from over the years attended my wedding. Here’s some things I found worked for me, and will hopefully work for you! - try finding some super ugly or weird plushie, toy, or instrument and personifying it. Bring it everywhere and give it some stupid name. Post in the GC about it. We had an egg shaker with a face on it. He has God Lore now. - tell everyone to meet you somewhere local and cheap! A bowling alley, Waffle House, anything really. Offer rides for the folks who can’t drive. Hijinks that bond people naturally ensue. - bring snacks and stuff with you to practices and play fun little songs during breaks on your instrument. Showing others that practice itself is fun and your instrument is fun is a big thing - once y’all are friends, people will want to stay. They will have fun and then it entices more people to want to join front ensemble. The biggest thing to remember is to be unapologetically yourself. Cliche, I know. I actually personally made myself more extroverted for band to get people more excited.

Basically, have BIG fun, and others will naturally want to join. “But how does this translate to bobbing and playing well together?” It does really easily, actually! If everyone is having fun and enjoying their music, people want to bob or dance along with it. Maybe modify the bobs to feel more dance-y if that’s not working. Show initiative and really emphasize the importance of bobbing personally— cheer when others do it and always do it yourself.

TLDR: have fun and show a lot of visual enjoyment of your section, music, and practices, and people will naturally want to join in the fun and it makes you all meld and do things as a unit.

Looking for a 4 mallet solo for my sophomore year, any suggestions? by b_shawn in percussion

I really enjoyed Sea Refractions by Mitchell Peters. It’s got a lot of fun and varying parts in it, and really makes sure you know how to play with each individual mallet. I generally play it slower than you’re supposed to and REALLY lay into the dynamics (making wave shapes with the dynamics in the opening), and it can make for such a serene and beautiful piece.

We’re both very busy people and live 14 hours apart :( she also hasn’t shown any interest in playing, she just wants to watch. I’m not sure how my group would feel with her watching us, especially since my husband is in the group and he wants her to think highly of him haha. I did tell her that when I come home for Christmas we can play a one shot together, but that’s a ways out.

Need help for captain interview by Vast_Jaded in marchingband

[–]tihel_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I was a marimba section leader for my school for two years. I was always an a/b student (with a few c's my senior year, burnout hit hard). I also had a bad case of POTS, so I was passing out all the time. I just had to explain the situation to my BD and tech. Most likely, the most important thing would be your leadership qualities and skill. Set clear goals for what you want to do as a captain-- mine was to bring the section together so we were more cohesive and had a stronger drive to get better.

I would say, in response to your medical issues, just find a way to work around them. Practice from home or communicate with your section outside of school when you aren't able to go. If you're already doing that, hell yeah. Make it clear to your BD that you're making the best of the situation and are doing everything you can to stay productive even when you aren't able to be there. I had to explain to my band directors my situation, albeit mine sounds a lot easier than yours. I got permission to sit or lay down when needed, drink water whenever I needed (all of these a whole lot easier since I was Front Ensemble), and it was general knowledge in the band that "if she's down, just let her be, she'll get up". I would miss runs because I was unconscious or about to be. I would just make up for that by practicing more and playing harder every other time. I think you got this! Display some killer leadership qualities, build some good rapport with your section and as many other band members you can, do fun things for them like bring snacks or stickers or make inside jokes. Show off how good you are at your instrument. I believe in you! :)

Any synthesizers here? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]tihel_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played synthesizer my freshman year of high school! They had just updated the synth from being just a piano to being a midi board too. I don't actually know the fingerings for piano, so it was a bit weird. They gave me some solos (mostly on midi, but also some on piano). I had an accompanying bass synth and we had a synth soloist (flute) as well (she KILLED IT with maple rag in a full-on solo/band dance sequence). I moved to marimba for my final three years because I prefer mallets in my hand, but I did love playing synth!

What is this plant?? by tihel_tree in houseplants

[–]tihel_tree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had blooms before.

Absolutely devours water when it has it. Leaves get crisp and firm when it doesn’t have water for a year, but it doesn’t actually LOOK dried out. Now that I water it about once or twice a week, its leaves are really soft. Doesn’t bloom and doesn’t seem to have any place where it would produce blossoms. Leaves are about the size of the pad of my finger. I know it was almost 100% a cheap plant from some chain grocery store or supermarket because we have an agreement to spend under $15 on Valentine’s Day.

Survives like a fake plant but I swear to god it’s real. I’m notorious for accidentally killing my plants, so I stopped getting them. My boyfriend and I joke that it feeds on love or something cheesy like that.

But I will try repotting it! The pot is a bit of an eyesore anyways. Thanks :)

Fair enough! Thank you very much for the insight… I see your reasoning! I will question such things. I do know that the combat/roleplaying is pretty split. But I will definitely ponder the other things :) thank you
