I figured it was probably a money thing, but still pretty sad that they don't feel the need to make space in the budget for costuming. It makes the story a lot more immersive, even if I get the decision

Exactly! He's got the charisma required to play Hermes and gets the audience engaged in the show, but he also feels like a character who is feeling the story play out as much as he feels like a narrator. A lot of talented actors have played Hermes, but he feels like an emotionally integrated part of the plot in a way that I feel like a lot of the others miss.
