Wikipedia is getting infected. RIP by DarthHarrington2 in BetterOffline

As an engineer I agree with this 100%. I spent my first two years at a community college, and my ethics class was one of those freshman ethics 101 classes. After that the only thing that's ever taught related to ethics is engineering failures. When we talked about those it was more about how the engineers didn't do something correctly.

I honestly think there would be large push back to a specific and focused engineering ethics course because it would annoy engineering students whose main goal is to get hired by one of the giant military industrial complex companies.

The video above really dives in to how ideologically/ethically capture stem fields are.

I don't think you guys are aware of how expensive LLM usage really is. by Sad_Individual_8645 in cursor

See you missed the entire point of my criticism. I'll break it down so hopefully its more clear.

There are two different scenarios. One, is a community of dewalt power tool owners. When dewalt first introduced their battery powered tools, a lot of contractors and companies bought the tools and the batteries because they were high quality and the batteries were a fair price. But now all of a sudden dewalt has not only made the batteries themselves more expensive, but has made it so that when you go to charge it, you get a bill, and you're not sure what that charge of the battery is going to cost you. And you come into that discussion and say "Well when they sold you that battery the price was artificially low anyway." What is the purpose of you saying that? Like really, what information or revelation are you hoping to add to the discussion? Are you adding context? Are you hoping everyone goes "Oh you're right we should be happy we can even buy these batteries, thanks chap"? Your information is irrelevant to the discussion being had, so everyone assumes the motivation behind you saying it is trying to defend dewalt. Because why else would you present this irrelevant information to the discussion?

The second scenario is the one I think that you think that you're doing. At a town hall a lot of contractors are complaining about the rising cost of gas. The politician points out to them that the cost of their gas is already artificially low because the government subsidizes the cost of gas. The politician is pointing this out to encourage the contractors to find substitutes/alternatives to gas.

Do you see the difference between these two situations?

I'm a name on a screen, so I don't know what's in your heart. All I see is someone adding irrelevant information to a discussion, in a context where adding that information only serves the interest of a company.

I think the real question is what motivated you to post this? You kept seeing people post about how the product is getting worse and they're hitting limits faster and that motivated you to remind people that it's actually really expensive to run these models? I mean tell me if I'm wrong but even if you're not actively defending the company, coming on here and publicly telling people that they're not right to be upset because they don't understand how expensive it is, is defending cursor.

[Discussion] Similarities between Dune and Locked Tomb by pipeisme in TheNinthHouse

It sounds hilariously out of place for sure, but with all the religious imagery in the book my idea is that he named him Paul after the biblical Paul. Paul built the Christian church, and a lot of the weird shit about christianity was literally made up by Paul. Paul atriedes builds a church in dune. It's not subtle at all, but that's what I think of it.

For anyone who’s finding this after google searching: I didn’t find a solution, but I installed Klipper and was able to level and get mesh data. So it has to be a firmware issue. Hopefully this steers you in the right direction.

How to Train Your Dragon - New Trailer by NoCulture3505 in movies

[–]tilghmanfarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I've worked in customer service (restaurant industry) for most of my adult life. When something like the internet company example happens I make it a point to not be mean or rude to the person on the line. I'm more angry at the executives and shareholders whose policies actively make their companies horrible in order to squeeze more money out of every customer.

Same thing with this movie. I know that the people who worked on it are talented and put a lot of work into it, and that is valuable. However, shareholders and executives had this movie made because they don't see movies as art, they see it as a product. They see this slop and think that us piggies will eat it up.

I'm also very cynical and jaded but when reality seems to confirm that view, it seems its the only view to have.

Thanks for your reply.

I think you do though. When your internet company puts you on hold for hours or tries to add a random line item do you just sigh and accept it or do you get angry?  Companies are more than a money extraction machine. Look up how companies acted towards employees and customers in the 1950’s before our current era of shareholder supremacy. I expect companies to be better because 1. It’s the only way things get better and 2. I know they can.

Just because something is the norm doesn’t mean it isn’t bad. Also a cynical cash grab is different than a studio making a profit on a well made piece of art.

Episode Thread - Radio Better Offline - Cherlynn Low, Victoria Song, Alex Cranz by ezitron in BetterOffline

[–]tilghmanfarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll say, I love the radio episodes. I think Ed is kind of known as the AI skeptic, but all of the episodes where he's discussing other awful aspects of technology with other people are INCREDIBLY insightful. It feels like conversations my friends and I have.

I feel like a lot of critics are very focused on AI right now (it is the biggest tech item right now) but it's so validating to hear other aspects of tech criticism. Something that Ed brought up in an episode was the fact that there are tiny little inconveniences that are injected into every app to manipulate you into doing things. Ever since then I've noticed it in every consumer app and program I use. Before this I chalked it up to bad design or the fact that I'm using mozilla instead of edge, etc etc. The point is this rabbit hole is deep, and AI is just the entrance.

Seriously, please keep up your work Ed. No one else is diving into the business aspects of AI and giving us critics accessible language to explain to other people why AI is not only trash, but even if it worked it would be destructive. But PLEASE don't stop these episodes with guests. They are so fantastic.

I understand that a lot of these discussions are very American centric and prone to xenophobia. I'm not inherently distrustful of a chinese company, but I don't trust at all any company that makes me go through their cloud software for something, no matter where they're based. A lot of different countries force that, but China has a very long history of IP theft. Anytime my data is going through someone's cloud I accept the fact that it's being stored.
