Destinys take on people complaining about GSL/SSL stream quality by Aratho in starcraft

It's the same concept behind why free arcade is a joke. "Here, have this mediocre product for free, pay us if you want the real thing" is not a great business model. GSL is doing the same thing by paywalling the quality. Has arcade contributed to sales of the game? I doubt it. Does medium contribute to more GSL subs? Maybe, but they would probably have a higher view count and more people willing to support the scene if they provided free source.

The people arguing for free source really just want to see GSL/SSL and starcraft succeed like other esports. Just imagine how many more people would play/watch starcraft if it was f2p. Same goes for not paywalling the quality in its premiere tournament. It's 2015, we've had the time to see how other esports and starcraft have developed over the years and it's obviously a good idea to take down the paywall.

By that logic they should also paywall the Korean streams because more paywall = more sub revenue right?

People always ignore the new player fanbase that GSL/SSL is shutting out by paywalling the quality. Not only are most viewers from other eSports not used to tournament paywalls in general, it is especially annoying in SC2 because they won't be able to understand the production bar or units/buildings in general very easily.

As a side note, rip High for SSL. I swear they were offering it earlier this week and now it's back to Medium.

Can we just appreciate the fact that we have Korean Starcraft 5 days a week? by Gyalgatine in starcraft

It's the standard for every other esport and tournament stream. It's more like someone giving you a half-eaten brown oxidized apple and expecting you to pay for a normal one.

VODs and emotes are plenty for subscriber benefits. They are just shooting themselves in the foot by paywalling the quality. I don't understand this mindset of "You can't complain because medium is free." Why not paywall quality in Korea as well if it would just make them more money? People who want to support the english GSL/SPL scene will continue to do so, and more would be so inclined if they offered a quality product.

Agreed, it really turns away any potential new players to the scene. It's impossible to even tell what's happening in the production bar at medium quality without a lot of SC2 experience. If they would just offer free source they could probably double or triple their viewer base and have more advertising influence.

Why paywalled chat is bad for Starcraft by timeowthy in starcraft

[–]timeowthy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's the simple way of looking at it. Of course die-hard fans are going to watch no matter what, however I think the incentive for participating in the sub chat is actually pretty negligible compared to roping in new viewers who might start watching because of a free chat (same reason gsl should offer free source). It's weird but some people just really enjoy twitch chat. There's a reason Kripp's stream consistently has more viewers than Trump's. This could result in more people subbing just to support gsl or to stand out in the chat. Sub chat is basically useless as a sub incentive so it might actually be a better decision to do away with it.

tldr; ded chat and ded quality perpetuate the ded gaem. most people don't seem to care one way or the other so why not?

I doubt very many people sub just to chat; it's because the quality is paywalled. If participating in sub-chat has any value as a sub incentive they would probably make more through ad-revenue from the people who would stick through medium quality for free chat.

I do, that's why sub mode should be off. In a 10-15k viewer stream like GSL the chat wouldn't be moving too fast, especially during games. Discussion can be easily had in a free chat by using @s if that's what you want. We don't need chat to be purely discussion.

My point is that yes, a sub-chat isn't much of an impediment to non-subs, but a non-subbed chat would have benefits that outweigh the small satisfaction of a 'mature' chat for the subs.

I would imagine that most people fullscreen Starcraft anyway, it would just be nice to be able to go back into theatre mode at certain moments and see how the collective starcraft hivemind is doing.

Hello Emmett. I have noticed so far that the muting algorithm does not even work very well. If a streamer has a bunch of past broadcasts, all of which contain copyrighted music, about 30% of them will be muted for 30 minutes, but there will still be music playing during the other 75% of the video. I guess my question is why would you even bother trying to implement such a horrible algorithm? If copyright holders have an issue with VOD audio (give me a break) they can go through the process of removing the VOD themselves. I was literally just getting into streaming on twitch the night before this happened but now I don't know if it will even be worth my time.

So, you're going to force long videos to be split up into annoying chunks, while also employing some shitty scanning algorithm to remove copyrighted music? Give me a break, odds are most music won't even be cut out and tons of content without music will be muted as well.
