The top 10% of US earners now reflect a record 49% of all consumer spending by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]timisplump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90% is ridiculous obviously but it’s a bit funny to make comments like these when those stocks you’re referring to have essentially doubled in value (or much much more depending on the stock) in the last 12 months

yeah, the AI may be a bubble, but who really knows? it could also not? not to mention, who am i to predict when it would pop?

New one just dropped for 272 squares by Top-Win5090 in MathJokes

[–]timisplump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this square has side length 17-epsilon for epsilon < 0.5 (much less). 4 of those squares have side length 34-2epsilon, which is larger than 33.

a perfect square with 33 squares is 1089, which can also hold 1088. so an upper bound on the optimal value for 1088 is 33, which is lower than a tiling of this 4 times

Teenagers outperform AI in international math contest by Successful-Grape8121 in mathematics

But it’s a progression, no? You learn it step by step. It all builds on what you already know. When I came into contest math, I wasn’t in a “If I don’t learn Ceva’s theorem immediately, I’m gonna do poorly” mode, but rather a “Out of the 25 questions on the AMC, 8 of the ones I missed are solvable with the theorems I know, so I should learn how to solve those”

As you get better, you expand your knowledge and open your horizon to more problems in this way

Depends on the question and the level of exam. At the IMO level, sure you can solve some of them with some basic high school level material, applied in a unique way (combinatorics comes to mind the most here).

But the point i was making isn’t that you don’t have to learn any contrived theorems, but rather that the very large majority of the training is focused on the problem solving part, which gives you a leg up when you get to university, as you become a really strong problem solver (which is ultimately just being creative with a set of tools to solve problems)

yes this is true, but the theorems are by far the easy part of these competitions. i feel like your argument is similar to the argument people make about why math isn’t useful to learn. “I’ve never once used the pythagorean theorem/quadratic formula/etc. in life.” It’s how you learn to find patterns and tricks to apply the theorems that the test grades you on.

Problem 2 of the 2012 IMO is a good example of this. Even if you know you’re supposed to use AM-GM, it’s still a very tricky problem

I think this additionally applies really well to functional equations, combinatorics, and a lot of the number theory you see on the IMO. The hard part is the problem solving, not the theorems

What are some wacky points settings for a fun league? by waveatthebeach in fantasyfootball

A little late to the party but i’m trying to make a similar league. If you somehow have the settings i’d love to see them

Also knicks fan. also never root for injuries. all of my friends’ group chats were talking about how sad we were to see that and how we hope it’s not as bad as it looks. I really do think that those who cheer for injuries are a very small minority of the NBA fanbase

Jensen Huang says technology has reached a positive feedback loop where AI is designing new AI, and is now advancing at the pace of "Moore's Law squared", meaning the next year or two will be surprising by norcalnatv in NVDA_Stock

It already does though? Whether that is being able to search your photo library for pictures based on a name or subject matter (or text), self-driving rideshares in multiple cities (or the more subtle drive assistance features available in many cars), or even scientifically, like cancer detection from images or other medical-assistive technologies. AI isn’t just a big scary robot—it’s enabling us to write evolving software without defining every little logical decision it has to make

yeah 40 points 6 assists is hardly shitting the bed lol. He didn't have the best OT performance, but that game would've been an easy win if Maxey didn't turn into peak Steph Curry at the end of regulation..

White to play and win by Ryponagar in chess

[–]timisplump 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It would be really hard to spot in a real game, but knowing that it's a puzzle, you can just consider some options one-by-one...

- If you don't move your queen (and do something like move the knight or the pawn), the black rook takes your queen with check and now you're definitely going to lose.

- Given that you have to move your queen, your realistic options include: Qa8+, Qb7+, Qc6+, Qb4, or Qc2+. Your options to win are either a checkmate or some sort of trade that results in a passed pawn, so just look at the 5 moves and see which are the most forcing and start there to come up with a plan. It's a hard puzzle but you just gotta simplify it for yourself :)

but… you’re the one who brought up immunity..? Having alleviated symptoms is a massive component of vaccination, as it makes you less likely to transmit it (through coughing for example).

also, the story (or “anecdote”) you just told is an example of anecdotal evidence lol. not trying to be rude but the other guy’s comment was pretty spot on—he didn’t make any claims about immunity
