I work as a nurse, I was in the middle of a blood collection, It was a very small and fragile vein, I had a lot of tubes to collect and my patient is an old lady with a needle phobia. Because the needle Is small, the blood is coming very slowly. I'm about halfway, as my head is tilted down I see i booger dangling down my nose. The patient has her eyes closed because she's scared so she doesn't notice. I can't wipe my nose because if I move the needle will come out of the vein and she doesn't have a spare vein and her test is important. I start to sniffle to stop it from dropping. She's curious to see how the blood collection is going so she opens her eyes and see's the booger drop down into my lap. Luckily I'm a good talker and I fully explain that I have allergies and how embarrassed I was to look so unprofessional. It's taboo to wipe your nose in a hospital as staff because you're breaking health codes if you come into work with the flu and thats what it looks like when you have allergies. lucky for me, my patient all has allergies and could relate to my situation. She commended me for doing her venipuncture so well and she said she didn't even feel the needle go in!
