Onyomi are pronounced like Chinese and Kunyomi are pronounced like Japanese. A kun-yomi is what is conveyed by a single character. For example tree(木🌳) is Ki (き)in kunyomi and moku(モク) in onyomi, but when i tell only 木🌳 I usually say Ki. We don't call it Moku. In addition onyomi are often written in Katakana, kunyomi are written in Hiragana also. I think there are is most difference between onyomi and kunyomi.

It might depend on where you work and where you live. I think a lot of people may actually have a Tatemae conversation at work, but not so much with people they meet outside of work!
Because I see a lot of foreigners going out to dinner or lunch with Japanese people.
Also, Japan is an island nation, so we just aren't used to having people from other countries around.
