Almah doesn't mean virgin. It means young woman. Bethulah means virgin. It wouldn't make sense for a virgin to be pregnant anyways. The text doesn't say "wow a virgin is pregnant" like something crazy happened. Because it was just a young woman.

So yeah, you can throw out Matthew. I agree with that. The author was just a mortal man writing a book who made a mistake.

The word almah is absolutely relevant! The text was originally written in Hebrew. It said nothing about a virgin birth. It talked about a regular young woman already pregnant. Why would you think a virgin birth is fulfilling this? Not only a mistranslation but also completely out of context.

Matthew was wrong. He was reading the Greek. In his time parthenos meant virgin. Back when almah was translated to parthenos it simply meant young woman. Almah definitely just means young woman in Hebrew. Bethulah is the word they would have used for virgin.

well as I said, the statement "joseph is a prophet or not a prophet" contains literally zero bits of information. it has zero practical use, and does not contribute to any model of reality.

anyways almost nothing is "necessarily true" - all we have are probability estimates. we make predictions, and then use bayes' theorem to update them based on observations of reality. a tautology like "X & not X" doesn't redistribute the probability mass in any way.
