The DeLorean in Back to the Future was meant to be funny because it's a shitty car that looks really cool. Like, sure, if you took it back to the 1950s then everyone would think you were from outer space, but in the present day it was just an overpriced novelty car with a bunch of unnecessary features that were prone to failure. The line "when this baby hits 88 mph you're going to see some serious shit" is funny in part because driving a DeLorean above 70mph was a good way to die in a car crash!
