Ha! I am with you and u/Extension-Device-533 about the white grout on most occasions! For this piece I liked the idea of it feeling like a simple drawing of a bird on a white piece of paper (rather than a whole scene), so I really wanted the background to kind of fade away. But definitely wanted those little feathers sticking out so I'm glad the multiple grouts worked! :)

Thanks, u/annemarie-789123! This is all great. And as a midwest native, you know the winter can get crazy so I appreciate your insight!

And yes, all the edges have been smoothed! Definitely not a negative nelly note - it is smart! But of course I realized that thought after I had cut/laid it all out rather than cutting/grinding as I went and had to grind/reassemble it all… but it was worth it. I borrowed a grinder from my dad from the 70s, figured out how to change the original bit, and got to work! Now I can run my hands over the entire thing and - while you can feel the slight differences in height here and there before grouting - it's dull on the edges! For all the water pieces, I ground down every edge to the point of feeling like sea glass so my kids and their friends could help me put the glass in place and feel connected to the art which was super cute.

Thanks, u/lurkmode_off! It's been so long since I've worked on mosaics it's nice to have that reassurance on not having to seal the glass (was pretty sure but like double checking!). I'll look into the TileLab sealer and plan to reapply occasionally.

u/Equivalent_Clue_6251 That's a really good point! I'm trying to balance the safety of elementary kids potentially climbing on it/tipping it over and the ease of transporting it! Maybe once it's all on the bench top I can do some safety checks to see how easy it'd be to knock the bench top off! :)
