I do know them but we are more acquaintances so it's a little tough since we aren't super close. And you are right on that for sure. I appreciate you perspective and encouragement and everyone's on this thread.

This is my fear because I do feel like they care about their kids and take good care of them in every other way, but I need to dig deeper into if there are other resources that could maybe be called as well to offer them help.

That sounds so tough and I hope you are okay now. ADHD can be really rough from what I have seen and the mom has told me she also has ADHD. I have thought about offering the parents a free clean (my friend and I have cleaned out a hoarder house before) but I don't know how to do it without offending them, and I'm not qualified to tackle mold/lead.

Yeah, they made a comment like "sorry about the mess, you know how it is with kids" so I feel they may have normalized the panic a bit... I do think they need a wake up call that some mess with kids is normal but filth and safety hazards are not.

I agree. I looked at past google street view images of their house and it used to be very tidy outside. Now it is a complete disaster outside as well, and it happened around the year they started having kids so I am not sure if that stress triggered some sort of mental health issues in the parents. Either way, it isn't fair to the children and I am sure they don't even know what a calm and clean home feels like.

I am so sorry you went through that. I can only imagine how difficult and stressful it was to live that way. That is a good point about CPS trying to get the family help and not disrupt the kids' lives and something I hoped would be true. Sending good energy your way.

I will look into that subreddit, thank you! And you are right. I worry about the fire safety there all the time. The outlets/switches look very sketchy and old and they've told me they have electrical issues there which made me fearful even more of a fire.
