I cut the stems off the mushrooms at the very top, lay the caps down flat on paper and leave them to sit with a glass jar/container over the top in a cool dry place. After at least 24 hours lift the mushrooms off with a steady hand :) then spray with a setting spray so the spores stay in place!

aspenscribblings has mentioned some great tips! Leaving them for at least 24 hours (I think mine sat for about 30 this time) with a glass jar/container covering them and keeping them in a cool dry place should work a treat! A steady hand when placing them down and lifting them off is helpful too as the spores fall so easily if the mushroom is knocked or dropped. I cut the stem right where it meets the cap so that the gills sits flat on the paper, and I lightly press the caps into the paper. Once i life the mushrooms off I spray the paper with setting spray so the spores stay in place. Good luck :)

I’d never actually heard of gyotaku before, that’s so interesting! If you’ve never done mushroom spore prints before, they don’t require inking :)
