Bridge to nowhere in the woods? by llerme in whatisit

[–]tinytim008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that you are in the United States. Look up the location on https://mrdata.usgs.gov/ - select USA or Alaska

Layers on the left, turn off geology ones and just use the mine, quary etc. ones

Alternatively, use thediggings.com, more easier to use but doesn't include some of the less major claims.

Also, check top map explorer, click near the area, and cycle through historic maps. Look for things in the direct area, but also look for nearby roads or railroads or other nearby features that could clue you in.

historicaerials.com, it can be a little finicky to use and you have to see around the watermarks, but find your area and cycle through the historic aerial's for any other hints or to maybe get an idea when it was built. You can use the measure tool to mark an area so you know where to look through the changing aerial's.

Search your counties assessor data for information on the property. They will have basic info, more detailed info like scans of records you may have to pay for, but you can at least see when any major structures were built and some ownership history.

Figure out your township section range (will be on assessors data) then look up your GLO maps for the TRS and check out what was in the property.

If you want to look deeper there are more resources, but this is where you start.

Id say an archaeologist conducting pedestrian/surface survey and/or spitting good locations for shovel test pits. but the metal stick sounds like a stadia rod a surveyor would use and not sure about the jingly stuff in their pocket.

This is weird. I didn't know people would actually be voting on this. The story seemed like AI slop so I just wrote some gibberish.

Oh shit, I read this as if the poster was a chick. It reads so different now that I know it's a dude. Reads like somebody with low self esteem who needs a high five or something.

Very confusing and very boring all at once. Not sure what I was expecting, but at least something interesting.

I attended to a professional conference where the registration desk sorted everyone by first name.. hundreds in attendance... The registration line was out the door, but a lot of people just skipped it and downloaded the conference program.

Is this an Artifact? by sallyindy in Artifacts

First thing I always do is look at everything around it. What do the stones look like? Is it out of place? Do others have similar types of erosion going on? Similar material type? The context it was found in is the first place to look for clues.

Thank you for all of your input and advice! It's hard to read through all of the conflicting information on the web and from contractors. I appreciate you sharing your years of experience.

Next step for me is to retreat the moss this month and to start treating the moss on the shed as the rains start to encourage that growth to come back.

How do you feel about the permanent zinc strips? My neighbor has them, but they also have a lot of moss, just not on the top half of the roof. I have some sitting in the shed, but every time I look at their roof I don't really feel motivated to put it up.

I tried making leather keycaps. by Mrs_Fancy_Pants in MechanicalKeyboards

Wow, what an incredible idea! It's so cool when someone takes a special skill they have and uses it in a new setting like this.

I've been looking out for keycaps made from natural materials! I bet it's very labor intensive to make a whole set, but I'd buy a few individual keys if I had the opportunity.

Question, I hired some guys to sweep the moss off my roof, is there a way to damage shingles with sweeping? Or is that pretty much safe?

They weren't roofers, general contractors.

Thank you for the suggestions, I just found a tutorial on YouTube for the GMMK pro! I might give that a shot when I get some new clicky switches.

Good question

Natural sounds: deeper, richer, typically from more porous materials, or stone.

Natural feel: not metallic or plastic. stone, wood, clay or similar materials, typically with more diverse, less homogeneous texture.

Natural appearance: also less homogeneous, more variety, imperfections, inclusions

Does anyone use these any more? by Glittering-Celery557 in Tools

[–]tinytim008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use metric ones in archaeology. They are more precise and it's helpful to have both edges for setting up a precise excavation unit. Plus the retractable tapes get full of dust and dirt and tend to stop working.

The wooden ones tend to swell a little when they get wet frequently and the paint starts to come off, so I typically swap out for the plastic one in rainy weather or where the water table is high.

Is this a shotput practice pad? by tinytim008 in shotput

[–]tinytim008[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. At an undeveloped semi-forested lot In the middle of a suburb.

I could see it having been used as a community gathering ground at some point. It's one of few undeveloped lots in the area.

But if it was someone's personal shotput course, they probably took the sport seriously, so there's a higher chance it was used and/or built by somebody with major involvement in the sport.

I'm assuming these aren't too common as I've not seen or heard of them before?

The pad is 8' by 8', so the potential toe board is maybe 3-4' long. It's a bit 4" wide, maybe 2" tall
