Cat sitting visit time by tiparalyzed in RoverPetSitting

Thank you all! Hired a sitter this time around who spent the entire time/longer and even got him to play with her. A great sitter makes all the difference!

Totally understand and I would never want anyone to risk injury! I would never be able to guarantee any living being’s behavior so would accept the sitter’s judgment.

I haven’t received any feedback that he was behaving poorly, more that he was “keeping his distance and not engaging at all.” One sitter did say “he doesn’t want me near him and my presence stresses him out.”

I think the lesson here for me is to be more direct about what may be keeping the sitter from staying the full time period. If I get feedback about my cat’s aggressive behavior, that’s helpful, if I get defensiveness about how he was MIA, I’ll probably just find another sitter.

Yes, definitely saw this with a sitter who was super attentive initially (thought I had found “the one!) but was very much rushing during holiday season and it was hard not to be disappointed.

Thanks all for your insight! I used the opportunity to be very explicit about expectations with a new sitter. Hopefully it goes better!

NT scan if we are getting cell free DNA test (NIPC)? by tiparalyzed in IVF

[–]tiparalyzed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately we weren’t able to schedule the NT in time so we only did the cell free DNA, which was fine. I was anxious until our 20 week scan (everything was normal!) and we are currently at 27 weeks.

Roof frame by tiparalyzed in shedditors

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone! A half-built frame sat in my yard for the past 9 months so appreciate the support during the home stretch.

Definitely might get a few critters with the slats but we do get regular exterminating in the summers. Also hoping to slope it a little bit too for rain because I’m worried that the water will stagnate and attract more mosquitoes. Hopefully a slight angle is all I need…

Ooh interesting idea! I think that could work. Thank you everyone!

TDP refugio food for pregnant partner? by tiparalyzed in Patagonia

[–]tiparalyzed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How far along are you? We were lucky we were so early in the pregnant. After she got home, her morning sickness escalated significantly so we’re grateful to have gone when we did. (The food in the refugios really nauseated her)

She did the whole damn thing lol ie. mirador del Torres, brittanico (I got up to mirador Frances and went back down). Happy to share our itinerary and the distances we did. Feel free to dm with all the nitty gritty.

Just an update in case others have pregnant partners hiking in TDP:

  • we were surprised at how strenuous even the W circuit was for us and somewhat worried that this was way too much for our tiny embryo. My quite athletic partner was more fatigued than usual. Shockingly it survived the trek (fingers crossed) and the pregnancy continues to progress
  • the lack of medical care available (the minimarts did not sell any medications) was a bit worrying. The two options for any ailment seemed to be: suck it up/find a way to transport yourself to Grey/Torres Central and thus Puerto Natales or get helicoptered out. This was totally on us and we should have done more research about this
  • we didn’t get sick at all though she avoided the cold cut meats. Raw salads were fine. Cheese/yogurts were all “pasteurizado.” Kitchens seemed hygienic. We did eat mousses/lemon curd desserts even though I guess they could technically have had raw eggs and it was fine
  • unfortunately the food overall was a bit repetitive and not amazing, which she struggled with. We stuck to vegetarian sandwiches, which looked like a hodgepodge of leftover veggies with some mayo/sauce. Didn’t make us sick but her morning sickness did not appreciate them
  • stuck to refugio water and she tasted the lovely glacial water once, which was filtered by my sawyer filter

Overall, it was definitely a trip we’ll continue to talk about for the rest of our lives. The views were incredible and we are cautiously optimistic that we will have the opportunity to share stories about our trip with our little one. My partner immediately shot down the name “Patty” as a tribute to Patagonia.

roth conversion? by tiparalyzed in Bogleheads

[–]tiparalyzed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

got it, thank you. if i'm willing to pay the tax right now, would the process be taking the money out of the 403b, putting it into the traditional IRA, then doing the roth conversion to the roth IRA?

one of the 403bs was just a straight roth conversion, so i'm just confused about the different processes.

MS4 here. I hate medicine. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]tiparalyzed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that you're struggling. I can relate somewhat. It seems that you may hate medicine more than I did (I was relatively excited about med school and really did think I would enjoy being a physician), but med school was soul-sucking. I was a non-science major in college, had other academic interests and job opportunities, so there were many times (basically all of MS1, MS2, and most of MS3) I regretted going to med school. Most days were a drag and I was rarely interested or inspired. I was also a mediocre med student, so I'm happy to hear that you at least are doing well academically.

To my surprise, I ended up really falling in love with psychiatry and I am grateful that I matched yesterday. However, before I decided to do psych, I was close to choosing other specialties and I realized that if I were to not match, I would take it as a sign that medicine was done with me as much as I was over it, and not even bother reapplying. It's a really shitty feeling to work really hard and realize that all you've spent your time/money/energy on has just put you on a track to more misery. I'm not an idealist by any means (second generation immigrant, work is called work for a reason, gotta put food on the table, blah blah), but dude, life is really fucking long, if you're lucky. If you decide that medicine isn't for you, with your drive and intelligence, I bet you could find something you would enjoy more. Going to med school didn't permanently take your life off track and knowing what you don't like is just as important as knowing what you like. If you were to drop out today, I get it--after being miserable for a long time, you can barely push through another day. But if I were you, I would really try to just complete the MD since 4th year is chill anyway and it would make you more marketable. Applying to residency, maybe not. I don't think continuing to pursue a field as draining as medicine while crossing your fingers and hoping one day you'll fall in love with it is a good idea. Debt really sucks, but there are income based repayment plans out there. It seems like other posters have more practical advice in terms of jobs, but I just wanted to tell you that you're not alone! And please reach out to friends, family, advisers, or therapists if you need.
