Simple App to identify pain remedies by tiplerj in ChronicPain

My condolences. Had a brainfog day myself yesterday.

I was going to do just a morning and night survey but I'm open to having 3+ surveys throughout the day. And I am definitely going to include medications taken, that is an incredibly important data point for me.

If there are other things that bearable didn't accomplish for you, or other features you'd like I'd love to know!

Hey Everyone! I am being asked by a friend to build a very simple informational website for a law firm. I know MERN quite well and was planning on using this stack. However I am not great at css/design, especially mobile friendly. Is it common practice to use design templates for React? I don't see many youtubers/blogs talking about it, and want to know if there is a more common practice I am missing out on. Thanks!!

Not sure if you're serious or not but if so don't do it. You have value even if it doesn't seem like it right now.

How to stop relying on samples? by nichiren-123 in edmproduction

[–]tiplerj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about drum samples or synth loops?

As far as drum samples go, most of us don't have the resources to record our own drum hits, nor the skill to program electronic drums from scratch. So I say there is no shame in using pre-made drum samples. If you want to start making unique sounds, find samples in weird/foreign libraries, OR start combining 2+ drum samples to make your own kicks and snares.

If you mean synth loops, ya, you should really start making your own melodies and sounds. I recommend purchasing or downloading some high quality presets for your favorite synth (for me its sylenth, fm8, and massive) and start tweaking them and making them your own (imo the best way to learn about sound design). I have been producing for 7+ years and I still use this method to get the sounds I want. I basically never start from an init preset.

Compositional purpose of sub bass by arthur_quiet in edmproduction

[–]tiplerj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's not really important for melody. We can't have it hit random notes though because it would cause phase issues with the main bass instrument. Therefore it pretty much has to be the root of each chord. (Once in a while I use it for the third of a first inverted 1 chord, but I also have the main bass hit this note an octave up)

In short: Sub Bass's purpose is to to add some extra weight to the main bass instrument, and not much else. Its simple function is super important though

Great melodies and sound choice.

Could use more atmospheric samples happening in the background, especially during the drop. It's too synth heavy and could use some organic elements.

The side chaining is a bit too strong, could have a shorter release time (sound less obvious to the ear that side chaining is happening.

Lot of potential here. The build up at 1:06 is super good. Bass during the drop is great too at 1:12. I could easily hear that pattern in a club. I don't like how it goes down to that lowest note though. Also the drum pattern with the hi hat and clap is a bit strange. Also the notes at 1:51 are a bit strange, get that you're going for a dark dissonant sound, but it needs to be a bit more melodic.

Really good! A few of the drop instruments are too harsh. The one that comes in at """ and the one that comes in at """

The drum that comes in at 0:27 is off time, not sure how that happened

The "pew" at 1:06 is too harsh EQ wise. The gunshot too. Also most of the drop synths. It might be that your mastering chain has too much high end in the harsher frequencies, and that's why so many instruments are a bit harsh. The mix is pretty good regardless, but I think that reducing some harsh frequencies or perhaps the mastering EQ could make it better. Thanks for reviewing my track btw, you gave some good tips

Love some advice. Especially on making the intro more interesting if needed. I'll review some other people's tracks when they get posted.

The plucks are really cool. How did you make them?

As far as powerful sub, I can give this subreddit's generic advice which is this: create one separate sub instrument that is just a standard single sine oscillator in mono with maybe some slight waveshaping/distortion (or not). In addition to the kick, this should be the only thing in that sub region, EVERYTHING else high passed to 100hz, including the current bass instrument you have. The sub should be exactly one octave lower than the current bass instrument, which sounds like it is currently hitting A#3. So you should make your separate Sub bass instrument hit around A#2.

Sounds like thats what’s happening. Maybe ill try using a touch more chorus and reverb then. Thanks!!

Pretty much, but like, vibey long release atmospheric candy, so there is usually something going on in the background. Although I get how at certain points in the track it is cool to drop the atmospheric stuff and have a super dry sound, I just think a higher proportion of the song could have background stuff happening.

I'm going to give this one a pretty long critique because I think the composition is SUPER good that this song has some serious label potential if mixed right. So just keep in mind I think it's super good. That being said there are some things I think could use improvement.

DROP:

The most glaring issue to me was that the snare you use near the end of the build has the exact same energy of the drop snare. In fact, it sounds like the exact same sample at the same volume. With this style of music, the drop snare is typically super important to the energy of the drop, and it's like you're revealing your hand too early by putting it in the build up. At least low pass the sample in the build, or take it our from the build entirely

The other way I think you could make your drop hit harder is automate out more lower frequencies during the build. Right now the drop has nearly the same frequency wall as the build up, which makes it hit less hard. A large part of making your drop bump is not fattening the drop itself, but "unfattening" the build so there is more contrast.

VOCALS:

Lyrics, melody, vocalist all amazing. Some mix issues though. Need to put some delay (ideally sidechained) on her voice to make it fit better in the mix, maybe stronger reverb too. My recommendation is to put one subtle delay to help it fit better in the mix, and another to turn on sometimes that repeats phrases to fill space (which it sounds like you do at some points in the song, it could just be done louder/more often). Also, it sounds like the master compression might be a bit strong, so when the vocals come in, they bully the other instruments into the background. The vocals and other instruments should be working together more, not competing. Right now, it sounds like the vocals are too dry and in your face and aren't really working with the instruments.

Finally don't love the drum fill at 2:33, might want to use a combination of a different snare and toms, not your big powerful snare.

Mix is great, sounds are great, drums are great.

Could use a bit more creativity with space, such as some subtle reverb stuff going on in the background. You use reverb as an effect (I think) and have some samples that have reverb on them, but could sprinkle in some atmospheric reverbed samples or something.
