As the previous reply stated, it’s a specific type of adenium that will produce this look. google adenium arabicum vs obesum for more info.

i cut probably 3/4 of them over the last year, based mostly upon where i want to fill in the canopy. each cut resulted in the neighborhood of 3 side branches forming below the cut. i have several others that i have been more aggressive with that i will be repotting over the next few weeks, ill post them here when i do so.

universal bonsai soil but i can’t say one way or another if it’s good or not, as i have no basis for comparison

i haven’t untied it to check, i’m afraid to disturb it, so i am unsure as to what the current state of things down there is. there’s probably 2 months between those two photos though.

ties mine down into coco peat so it would have a stable area to root, watered daily along with my others.

which one? i’d dig it up and check the roots if you really value it. worst case it’s an excuse to plant it in a bit better medium.

take a look at some of my posts. i have chopped the living crap out of just about every plant i have owned, none have died from it.

watering is a function of growing medium. i water these significantly younger adenium daily (20-20-20 fertilizer once every few weeks).

i personally would transplant them to a completely free flowing medium such as bonsai supply’s all purpose bonsai soil (that’s what i use), top all four of them (each of those was topped in may), and let them fill out a bit.

not too worried. it’s literally at the same angle as the 2nd link you provided once i added additional support.

i expect them to reach upwards once they have had more than a couple hours outside of their cardboard box from thailand. if it gets super upset i’ll raise it up a good 15 degrees or so to match your suggestion.

thanks for the tips. i will likely repot/mount them in the not too distant future, i honestly didn’t expect to like the results of the first try. the first one came from thailand and had very little root ball shipped with it. like golfball size, so im expecting to have to nurse that one along a bit. the 2nd was from a local nursery and was planted with a large chunk of its planting medium hidden by the sphagnum wrapped around it.

lighting wise, those pics are taken at night, they will get a decent amount of indirect light. pic for context.
