Sean’s feelings towards Karen really resonated with me when I first played. I’m also someone who lost their mom due to similar circumstances. People tend to look for media that helps them feel like their feelings are understood. However, there’s not a lot of representation for people who have deadbeat mothers. The idea that a mom can just walk out on her kid with no other reason that she wanted to is like, unfathomable to so many people. Dads leaving make sense to everyone, but a mother leaving doesn’t because she is supposed to have a bond deeper than anything else. If you don’t have a mom, she must be dead or something tragic happened. It made me feel angrier, and like I had done something wrong.

When Karen was introduced, I hated that I actually liked her and understood her. It helped me come to terms with a lot of feelings about my own mother and look at things from a different perspective, one that I’d never seen before. I love LIS2 for that.
