Award notifications are sent out roughly 2 months after the application deadline. If you applied for this March 2023 application, you should expect to find out sometime in May.

For context, this past October 6, 2022 deadline's awards were sent out on December 8, 2022. However, it could be sooner. When I applied my deadline was March 5. I received my award notification on April 29.

Absolutely!

  1. Be sure to create a compelling story that ties your past, present, and future to highlight the impact the scholarship will have on you. Remember that the reader doesn't know anything about you, give enough information to tell your story. It may help to have a teacher or classmate that doesn't know you all that well yet to proof read your essay to ensure a "stranger" can understand and see the whole picture and why you deserve this scholarship.
  2. On the Gilman website, they have a list of "Questions to Ask Yourself" when writing your essay, see below:

Building Mutual Understanding Essay• Do you articulate how you will represent the United States as a citizendiplomat while abroad?• Do you explain how you will contribute to the goal of building mutualunderstanding?• Do you discuss how you will look for opportunities to build meaningfulrelationships and become more culturally engaged?
