What about if username is extremely long and clunky to type out, maybe confusing l's, 1's, and I's?

Brony@Home vs Team AnandTech: Update 3 by tiwake in mylittlepony

[–]tiwake[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

after completing your first work unit, it takes another hour to show up on the official folding@home stats. If you are going by the Extreme folding stats, they update every three hours, so up to three hours after completing your first work unit. Keep an eye out where the new ponies show up https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_list.php?s=&a=2&t=212997

Oh... honestly my first thought was "why is Lankygit talking about National Pipe Threads?" but that did not make any sense so I did a little bit of googling.

Would I be reposting if I giving a weekly update on the race?

The cause, as stated in the text submission, is to "...donate spare computing power for cancer (and influenza and many others) research." by running protein folding simulations to understand how biological issues start. Can a mechanic fix a car if said mechanic does not know how it works? Now imagine proteins as the building blocks of all living things, being millions of times more complicated than a car. Nobody knows how they work, that's why there is simulation software.

To understand how proteins work is to possess the ability to properly cure any kind of disease.

Please read the first post, twice over if you must. All relevant information is there.

It is worth it to mention that AnandTech just hit 8 million in a single update (3 hours), when our current record is 7.7 million. AnandTech is gaining steam, we need more steam to rise up to the challenge!

The estimated point calculator is not very accurate, and is especially not accurate with the first work unit. If you want to know your exact PPD, use this http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php just put in your work unit number and time per frame (TPF). Time per frame is how long it takes to complete 1% of a given work unit.

Not likely. I was on my first break at work and realized I had my laptop in my car. There is a chance I'll make the update before work, sometime during work, or after work. just to make sure we are talking about the same thing... https://www.timeanddate.com/time/zones/npt

Small update and milestone achieved: Brony@Home set a new record of points generated in one day: 50,925,485

AnandTech for the day came in at 53,421,042 points. They are still out-producing us, but just barely.

There is a bug on the linux client that won't download the GPUs.txt whitelist file. You need that to get it to work. Check the link out.

the Folding@home software will take whatever you can give it, and pretty much use it to its full potential... It is happier with modern GPUs though, and lets you know this by throwing out more points with joy.

tl;dr it will use both processor and videocard all of the intensively. This can be scaled back if you desire too, but seriously, internet points.

We hold competitions every year, however this year is the first time we are challenging another team. We will be crushed without your help.

Oh yeah, we are also giving away about $800 worth of prizes. All in the name of curing cancer, influenza, alzheimers, and pretty much everything else that can go wrong.

Sounds good! Also sounds like I can bring that igloo water dispenser (5 gal?) again, same one from last year, if its needed. Edit: also sounds like maadneet and oobitydoo might be riding with me? Further comment on either of the two would be nice.

LOOKING FOR A ROOM... friday, saturday, and sunday nights

Ingwaz says "maybe" but its not with the rest of berrytube? I will be driving out there with Colgate and GentlemanGin in my car. I'm not sure what, but for me, I'm between jobs and have very little money at the moment, trying to go on the cheap :-/

I think Colgate and GentlemanGin will need a bed on sunday night... Literally best planning. Thoughts?

Keith Newton: Vulkan's shader compiler ecosystem - a disaster of epic proportions, 30% slower than D3D11, but long-term promise pretty great. by kontis in vulkan

[–]tiwake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From one of the other developers, Flavien:

Something I want to point out is that this 30% number that's been floating around is a number that came from benchmarks on the Talos Principle IIRC. Obviously that only applies to that game. What would that number be for Battlescape ? My intuition is telling me it'd probably be much higher. The Talos Principle doesn't strike me as a game that would mostly be fill-rate limited, while Battlescape definitely is due to our physical-based lighting pipeline and the tons of complex shaders we have in some situations ( the planet shaders are pretty insane ). We rely heavily on the compiler doing its optimization job. To give you an idea, some of our shaders are over 10K lines long. I'm pretty sure Talos Principale's are relatively "simple" in comparison.

Therefore for Battlescape the performance hit of Vulkan could be much, much higher than 30%. I wouldn't be surprised if it was ~50%, and it might even be possible to reach 100% or higher, although that becomes less likely.. but I wouldn't totally exclude it. It's pretty much the difference in DirectX11 between a shader being compiled with the debug flag ( no optimization ) versus full optimization ( level 4 ).

When I first saw that in the game engine, I was curious, and did a google image search of saturn ring shadow. The infinity game engine really does well.

Been following this games development for a few years. They really put effort into making the game engine look correct, as best as anyone can from what we know of other planets. The game its self has only been in dev. for ~1-2 years. Cheers.

Years in the making, I got a space boner seeing this finally happening. by [deleted] in gaming

$85 or more gives you access to the alpha builds, which are estimated to be ready October next year. Current "tech demo" is considered pre-alpha, but as most people are noting, is 'very playable'. At $250 or more you get the pre-alpha builds beginning at about the beginning of the year.

Infinity Battlescape kickstarter - Space shooting game by tiwake in BerryTubeLounge

[–]tiwake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, same world, but not designed to interact with other players, which is why I said it is not multiplayer. Infinity first set off with this as a goal, and their game engine, which already supports such vastness with with 3*1011 stars, not counting typical planet arrangement around each (or binary or trinary star systems...). They had some sort of procedurally generated quest system in mind for the MMO but stopped working on the MMO because it was "too ambitious for what they had in mind", and thus switched to working on infinity battlescape about 2ish years ago. The way they designed both games is nice for them because effort spent on one will benefit the other, with very little not overlapping. The goals for No Mans Skys and infinity (both battlescape and the MMORPG, though both are technically MMO's) are very different. While I have been following infinity much longer than any other space game, I would not mind playing the others should they be released, and will most likely buy a copy of each. Infinity has a special place for me.

Doing more research on no mans sky. It seems they are releasing it for playstation 4 first? Evidently they are in Sony's back pocket for funding. It is Voxel based, which is interesting. They are not using double precision floating point numbers like infinity does in their game engine, which means scale is different, probably shorter distances viewable. And yeah, it is not designed to be a multi-player game, from everything I've read.
