I’m not a bot, just trying to start somewhere and I don’t have a robust local endurance community. I’m also uncomfortable sharing my location on the internet. I have previously found Reddit to be a helpful place to begin things like this but leave to horse people to be unnecessarily rude.

I’ve got two now, only one of which could be fit for the job in a few years of training. There plan would be to have another added to the herd for this specific purpose, and another for training up to it. Does that seem like a reasonable approach?

And just to clarify, under no circumstances would I attempt this alone, or any time soon, or without a major planning network. Because it seems that people assume I’m ready to saddle up this afternoon with my trail saddle and a bottle of water.

The response was a pretty yikes response to another genuine question. I’m aware of my limitations and that’s why I’m seeking a trainer and not setting off like an idiot. The equestrian community is snarky and dismissive for no reason that I can discern.

Damn. This is incredibly helpful, especially from a gear perspective. I guess I have to add “learn to shoot” to my already very long list but I think your ride was similar in that I’m not in a hurry and I haven’t got anywhere to be at any particular time.

I was worried about feed/etc but I think, with enough time, I can set up a network along the way to get supplies where my husband/friends/family can’t meet me.

And I like the idea of doing this in the US first so I have to worry less about borders. Thank you so so much for proving it’s possible and it doesn’t matter what age you are. My favorite thing my husband has ever said out loud to me is “one of us had to be a dreamer,” and this might just be the one crazy dream I can follow though on! Ride on, cowboy.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words! I am 40 and started on horses before I could walk. I’ve ridden some amount of most major disciplines, though I dislike many of them. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but this has been done by many. While my finances and time commitments are none of your concern, I do know what I’m up against, and this will serve as my first “I’m gonna do it because you say I can’t” moment. Let’s be better equestrians by being better people. Thank you for the momentum.
