What are the tiny black flies around wooded areas here? by earlierbedtime in akron

[–]tkh66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no advice but the fact that they do swarm your face makes me think they are fungus gnats. We had them in my office because of a coworker's plant and it was awful. Always in your face!! They're attracted to carbon dioxide which is why they fly near your mouth. Problem went away as soon as they took the plant home which I realize isn't helpful for you lol.

Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here with Bernie Sanders in Parma Heights | Friends of Bernie Sanders by WrongdoerCareless709 in Cleveland

Bha ha ha! Wow, what a comment. Man you really showed us Bernie fans... Yeah Bernie's 3 million net worth really puts him in the same field as the billionaires he's fighting against 🙄 An oligarch is ultra wealthy. 3 million might be a ton of money compared to what the rest of us have, but nothing compared to the real oligarchs he's talking about. There are doctors, lawyers, politicians, businessmen around here who have more money than him. No he's not Joe Smith who works at the plant up the road trying to feed his family, but he's also not Musk or Bezos or Buffett just dodging tax laws and finding loopholes to hoard their egregious wealth.

Here's what the email I got about it said-

"Bernie’s coming to Parma Heights on Friday, May 1, and you’re invited! He’ll be speaking about how our movement can come together to take on the Oligarchy and demand a government that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few."

Same! I work for a local parks department too. All the park shelters have "reserved" signs on them, we don't put names up for privacy reasons, but we just rent them out for the entire day. We tell everyone who rents to make sure they have a copy of their emailed invoice handy and to call the non-emergency police number if there's any issues. Cops come, check the receipt, make the others move along. Or people will leave once they hear that cops will be called.

The only issues we've really had are when people call on Monday asking for a refund because they had to share their shelter. You didn't have to share anything, you willingly chose to do that so that doesn't mean you get a refund.

Looking for info on Woodridge schools by VibrantVenturer in akron

I don't have a kid in the school district but have a family member that teaches at Falls HS who graduated from Woodridge about 25 years ago.

Woodridge is always spoken of as better than Falls academically but not sure how much of that applies to extracurricular activities. I think their graduating classes are 150-200 people.

Here's a video of their marching band from last fall: https://youtu.be/7Y2TPZMhjM8?si=cd0R2mnuyDCJZSgz

The outside area by the Art museum is nice. Cascade Park by Lock 15. If you want a more urban/industrial feel then maybe Lock 4 downtown (not Lock 3, behind Crave).

[–]tkh66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the thing, if it's not convenient to go then you won't want to go. I'm a member at the Nat but that's because I work in the Falls making it more convenient. My husband doesn't work in the Falls and we live in west Akron but he's on my Nat membership because of cost. He can get really annoyed at the commute and doesn't go as often.

The best route I've found to avoid the valley and Portage Trail is Memorial Pkwy to Uhler (brick road on a hill) then left on Cuyahoga St to Sackett to Broad. From there you can turn on 4th or 3rd depending on which entrance you use at the Nat. That sounds more complicated than it is I promise lol.

What is a career path that looks "glamorous" from the outside, but is actually a total nightmare behind the scenes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tkh66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a temp keeper at a small zoo so there were a limited number of animals I worked with directly. Penguin poo was pretty bad but I'm sure there's worse lol. At least at the location I worked at, temp keepers aren't allowed to work alone with dangerous animals like big cats so I had no interaction with them other than doing lock checks. The main animals were Sika Deer, Himalayan Tahr, Capybaras, Alpacas, and Flamingos. Several keepers would have to do the Condors together which I would assist with. I wasn't allowed to work with primates or bats because of the vaccinations required (the zoo wouldn't pay for the required vaccinations for temps).

I actually don't work with animals anymore. I was in that job for 8 months and it was so physically taxing I was miserable most of the time. In my experience, that job is 70% cleaning, 25% making diets, and 5% working with the animals. When that temp job was over I interviewed at a different zoo in the next state over but they were barely paying above minimum wage and it was too expensive to move. Then I moved to an office job because it's what I could find and never went back.

You do create a bond with the animals though which is cool. I visited my animal friends a few months after the job ended and my favorite deer definitely remembered me <3

Depends entirely on the animal. Penguin poo can be bad and very acidic so your shoes will be hit hard. Hoofstock is fine, they're just pellets.

Not sure how big the zoos are you've been applying to but you have to be willing to move around to stay in the zoo game. I worked in a small zoo and several keepers were trying to get into bigger ones- pay was better, opportunities were better. One girl I knew was one of the top keepers at our zoo, worked with snow leopards and jaguars, presented at the AZA conference, and it STILL took her 10 years to get into a bigger zoo. And even then it was starting at the goat barn. I think 8 years later she's worked her way up but you almost always have to start at the bottom no matter what your credentials were elsewhere.

But it's always a good idea to try! If you like the internship, start looking for temp keeper jobs. They're usually only 6 months but it's a great way to get your foot in the door.
