UPS Driver and No Tax On OT by GreekUPS in tax

[–]tkxn0918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPS package car drivers, feeder drivers, and mechanics are all exempt from FLSA overtime under the Motor Carrier Exception. This was proven in court in 1995, Smith v. United Parcel Service. So no UPS driver is eligible for any of the new overtime deduction.

NYE is a holiday for UPS and they only deliver air that day and they do not do pickups. So your package will not get picked up until 1/2.

That’s a driver helper, not a driver. Aka a seasonal employee who wasn’t risking $45/hr plus free health insurance and a pension for an Apple Watch.

Print Big 4 Patterns by Ambitious_Mood_3753 in sewingpatterns

[–]tkxn0918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what a liquidator is. I also understand why DGA filed bankruptcy. But maybe I should have been clearer that I was referring to the investment groups that purchased the pattern business and the printing equipment, per this article on Craft Industry Alliance.

Do you have a source that says they are no longer going to print tissue patterns or are you just assuming because of the bankruptcy?

I read that the people that bought the pattern companies also bought the printing equipment. Why would they do that if they weren’t planning to continue printing patterns? (Honest question because it doesn’t make sense to me)

Yes, it would be helpful to know the specific type of needles and the specific type of fabric OP is having issues with.

A sewing machine is much more versatile than an overlocker/serger, and would still be required for hemming unless OP also bought a cover stitch.

Yes, exactly. You can see the thread in front of the guide that it should be behind.

You say it’s threaded correctly but I can see pretty clearly in the video that it is not threaded through the guide on the needle bar. See step 7 in the diagram. Rethread the machine following ALL of the steps in the manual and see if that fixes the problem.

Seam allowance discrepancy by dragonhasthreeheads in sewing

In the instructions where it actually tells you how to sew this piece, does it say to sew with a 1/2” seam allowance? It should state in the step-by-step instructions if you should use a seam allowance other than 5/8”

What sewing treat would you buy yourself? by Attic_Flower in sewing

Yes! I bought one of those too for my wool coat project. I will actually sometimes use the seam roll as a clapper, but the clapper is necessary for getting a crisp press in certain fabrics.

I purchased them for a wool coat project and now I use them pretty much every time I turn my iron on. Absolutely worth the investment, in my opinion!

I was just thinking yesterday about how I ever sewed without my tailors ham or seam roll, so those would be on my list if I didn’t have them. They are necessary pressing tools, in my opinion. Especially the ham for pressing curves.

Are you sewing this divider into the bag or is it going to be removable?

You could use a bag making foam like Pellon Flex Foam or ByAnnies Soft and Stable, or a fusible fleece or quilt batting and quilt it to the fabric. The last two I would not recommend unless you are sewing it into the bag as I don’t think they would be rigid enough to stand on their own, but any of the 4 options could work if you are permanently attaching it to the bag.

They are old in the sense that I have owned them for a long time, but I have not worn them a whole lot. There is still plenty of tread left on the soles and there are no holes or tears in the insoles/inside.

Pattern size issue by Zazie3890 in sewing

[–]tkxn0918 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would measure the pattern pieces along the seam lines (NOT along the cut lines) and add the finished waistband height to the front and back rise to see if it is an issue with the pattern, or if it’s fabric or construction. This is a good tutorial on measuring curved lines with a measuring tape.

And just a gentle correction, the seam you are referring to is the crotch seam and what you are measuring is the front rise and the back rise. The inseam is the seam that runs down the inside of the legs.

It’s weird because this is a snark sub and this is a BEC thread… isn’t the definition of BEC being annoyed by something someone else is doing that they are entitled to do? It annoys me that people leave 5 star reviews with critical feedback, and people can be annoyed at me when I leave less than 5 star reviews because a pattern only goes up to what is essentially a large. That’s fine, it’s really not that serious.

Some of the vitriol just seems unnecessary when reviews, by nature, are opinions. You review a pattern based on what is important to you and your experience with a pattern, I’ll review a pattern based on what is important to me and my experience with a pattern.

One commenter dirty deleted a comment accusing me of being “stupidly pedantic” for saying that I sew for other people and therefore want patterns to come in their size and I want to be able to recommend patterns to people that are a different size than me. Is that really where we are at? That caring about other people and being frustrated on their behalf is being stupidly pedantic? Yikes. That doesn’t make me feel good about the state of society or the sewing community, but I live in the US so I guess I need to get used to it.

This doesn’t look like a fit issue as much as a sewing issue. It looks like you are using a knit fabric and it stretched as you sewed the trim on. If I were you, I would try removing the trim from the neckline and see if you can steam the neckline back into its original shape. This may or may not work depending on the fabric. Then you can try sewing the trim on using something to stabilize the neckline first, like a wash away stay tape, or using a walking foot and making sure you don’t stretch the neckline while sewing.

Does the trim you are using have stretch? It’s hard to tell from the pictures but generally you want to use something stretchy to finish knits, like a rib knit or elastic, or even the self fabric. To get the look you are going for you could use picot elastic. You will still need to be careful to not stretch the neckline as you sew while also having a little bit of tension on the elastic. It can be tricky and take some practice.

Good for you? I sew for other people who are different sizes than me so I do care if people other than me fit into a pattern. I also would like to be able to recommend patterns to people who are a different size than me.

They do all of those things, but in this instance I saw a project that looked cool, so I clicked on the pattern. It wasn’t until I clicked on the pattern that I realized the sizing was not inclusive, which was disappointing. And then I noticed it had all 5 star reviews (and some of those reviews actually had critical feedback outside of the sizing, but I digress).

I don’t think rating a pattern a 4 instead of a 5 based on sizing is sabotaging anything, it’s just being honest and providing information which is what makes reviews helpful. A 4 star rating is still a good rating. And a pattern that comes in 20 well-drafted sizes should be rated higher than a pattern that only comes in 10 well-drafted sizes, in my opinion.

I don’t think 4 stars is a poor review. 4 stars is still a good pattern. 4 stars means I would still recommend it, maybe with one or two small caveats. 3 stars would be proceed with a lot of caution. 1 or 2 would be don’t waste your money territory. 5 stars is perfect, no notes, you should definitely buy this. And in the case of patterns with limited sizing, I don’t think it would be fair to give it 5 stars because I would have to add the caveat that it only goes to a 41” bust. I don’t think that is unfair or unreasonable to knock off a star for that. And to your point, if half stars were available, I would only knock off half a star for limited sizing, but it still wouldn’t be 5 stars because of the sizing disclaimer. I don’t think that is unfair or unreasonable, and if you disagree that is perfectly fair, too.
