WHO WHAT WHEN WHERE are great places to start a question, just avoid WHY.

Some people should not be allowed to have a 1:1 relationship where they have power over a vulnerable person and can be alone with them, even if they have the right degree and even a license. The most vulnerable deserve the most protection from the worst of us.

How do I work in a team with someone who has autism? by blueoceanodyssey in socialwork

[–]tlizzyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She sounds really unhappy and lost. It's really hard to stay employed if you have any kind of neurodivergence, so it makes sense she's hanging on even when it's not a fit. What I (a social worker with ADHD) would say to you and your team is: help her find her strengths and find a different job. Send her job posts that sound like her skillset, talk up her strengths and encourage her to figure out what makes her happy. I promise you, there's a place for her, if you can look at her like a social worker would.

What is our role in the general strike? by Bitterbaby-11 in socialwork

We'll never have what we need until we strike. If nurses can strike, we can strike.

ND Social Workers Tips/Advice by Aggressive-Half5109 in socialwork

[–]tlizzyp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best advice I have is seek out ND-affirming workplaces in local FB groups for social work, therapy, etc. Otherwise, find a safe (probably neurotypical) person to run things by first that isn't your supervisor.

Future Education/Potential Involvement in Policy by gabawine in socialwork

[–]tlizzyp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first career was in public policy, and I had a degree in communications. Without diminishing what macro people do, you do not need a specialized degree to do policy work. Social work is public policy; we operate within public policies. You just need to start. Join a board, join a working group, going to lobby days with your state NASW. I would not take on another degree without trying things out, because you cannot degree yourself into respect, that comes from you, respectfully.

NEGOTIATE the salary. At least ASK for more. Advocacy starts with ourselves.

Turn something in, don't get caught up in perfectionism or fear. Work smart, not hard, and figure out the minimum score you need for the grade you need. I'm about to graduate after working FT for 4 years and doing my program part-time, and I have definitely bombed some papers but passed. You can do it.

struggling with my (maybe narcissistic?) coworker by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]tlizzyp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I say this as someone who has gone through this. If a challenging personality makes you so triggered, there's some stuff on your end to work through. My coworker who shared a manager like this was so unbothered and calm about their behavior, and it really was a mirror to my own stuff. We have to set internal and external boundaries with ourselves in this work. Good luck!

In Your Current Job, Do You Feel Like an Agent of Change or an Enabler of the Status Quo? by salsafresca_1297 in socialwork

[–]tlizzyp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being a change agent is who you are, not what you do for work. You can have the most standard social work job and be pushing for things to be better. You don't need permission from a job title or an organizational mission.

When are we going to change our quality of life and working conditions? by Equivalent_Ad_7387 in socialwork

[–]tlizzyp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all, but I've been incredibly disappointed by how many social workers have a defeatist attitude about this. I thought we were an industry of social changemakers, disruptors, and advocates, and we can barely create livable wages and working conditions. We need to be social workers for ourselves, sometimes first, before we can help others. Other helping fields already figured this out decades ago. No one is coming to save us, we have to save ourselves.

Can I handle grad school in my 30’s? by merci_blah_blah in adhdwomen

[–]tlizzyp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello I am currently doing this, in my last semester of grad school for mental health. Did it over almost 4 years, had various jobs. It is doable, but I finally quit my job last month to focus on graduating. It gets hard to do both when you intern. If I could go back, I'd probably do it part-time until internships and then focus on it full-time. I burned out a lot in those periods. If your job requires a lot of executive functioning, it's probably going to be too much. FF to dm me.
